Year of Earth Dog Experience - The Spa Man

Mandarin Oriental introduces Year of the Earth Dog Spa Experience

To celebrate Chinese New Year, which begins on 16 February 2018, Mandarin Oriental has launched the Year of the Earth Dog Spa Experience to ground and relax guests while rebalancing energy for both body and mind. Available all year, the treatment has been designed to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and ease pain and muscle tension during the year of the earth dog. The Earth Dog year is said to be one of action, requiring planning and energy in order to succeed. The Year of the Earth Dog Spa Experience incorporates several traditional elements to stimulate the senses, relax the mind and rejuvenate the body. To start; guests are welcomed with hot or cold towels infused with mandarin orange or tangerine oil, both of which symbolise good tidings. Guests are then invited to enjoy a welcome drink of Chinese red dates, honey and goji berries, which help to destress and encourage sleep. Traditional sweet treats popular during Chinese New Year festivities will be available in the spa’s relaxation area, including sweetened tangerine, coconut and ginger from the …

David Beckham launches House 99

David Beckham launches House 99

Football legend David Beckham has partnered with L’Oréal to launch House 99, a 13 piece grooming line which includes hair products and moisturisers. The launch is a partnership with the dominant international beauty business -L’Oréal, which has a track record in the male skincare market with L’Oréal Men Expert. Beckham has dabbled in the men’s grooming arena before with his range of fragrances. I haven’t been a huge fan of those. It will be interesting to see what the full line-up includes and how focussed it will be on anti-ageing and beards. The brand is said to be inspired by British barber shops as well as Beckham’s own favourite products, featuring skincare, haircare, bodycare and grooming, ranging from the Bold Statement Tattoo Body Moisturizer to the Softer Touch Beard Oil. Quinoa and spirulina are at the heart of the formulas, chosen specifically by Beckham for their reputation as health-boosting ingredients. I’m guessing from some of the imagery available that it will address shaving, beards and skin with 13 products. David Beckham launches House 99 It is said that …

Cliveden House Spa - The Spa Man

Review: The Cliveden Spa at Cliveden House, UK

The Cliveden Spa at Cliveden House offers a quintessential spa experience in the English country side. Situated in the grounds of the renowned Cliveden House estate, the spa has created a unique proposition with its newly renovated spa. Partnering with truly British brands that aren’t the usual names you would find in a spa setting, it’s reaching out to a new audience, whilst catering perfectly to its current clientele. Cliveden House really is one of the great names when it comes to English country estates. And with this comes much expectation. A five-star luxury hotel; the building is owned by the National Trust and operated under a long lease arrangement by the owners of Chewton Glen, Iconic Luxury Hotels. Sumptuous interiors, dark wood panelling throughout and the use of rich textures and warm colours including red and purples creates a cosy, welcoming environment. The staff are exceptional, greeting you by name and the food is impressive – especially the tasting menu at the André Garrett Restaurant. For more relaxed dining, head to the Astor Grill. …

Hotel Metropole Hanoi

Review: Sofitel Legend Metropole, Hanoi, Vietnam

The Sofitel Legend Metropole, Hanoi is situated in the Old French Quarter of the city, and you are right amongst the hustle and bustle of what is a frenetic city. The hotel harks back to the colonial era in ethos and design. Behind its classical white façade with green shutters and original wrought iron details, it gives way to a plush interior with neo-classical references and lots of stately wood paneling. Most rooms look to the streets or to the internal courtyard with garden and pool. When booking check whether you are reserving a room in the historic Metropole wing or the newer Opera wing. rooms in the Opera wing are larger and a touch more modern in style. Guests over the year have included the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Graham Greene and Somerset Maugham and it still attract prominent politicians and celebrities when the are in town. It is the number one address. It’s all very elegant with butlers and doormen on hand at every turn. Dining experiences are many and varied. Breakfast is a …

Midlifeedit Christmas Gift Guide

Kate O’Brien, travel and spa journalist and editor of Midlifeedit has compiled a Christmas gift guide as a special post for The Spa Man this year. Kate says: One of my favourite Irish brands (see here for my review some time back) Formulated on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic coastline – the Crookhaven peninsula and the beaches of Barley Cove to be exact – Modern Botany ticks all the boxes – all ingredients are ethically sourced – think Flax Seed Oil (hugely nourishing) Calendula (anti-inflammatory), Arnica (damaged skin and bruising) and the ultra soothing Chamomile and it really nourishes all skin types – even babies and helps with skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis. €35 for 60ml in a range of outlets in Ireland and here (The Christmas tree graphic is courtesy of those clever folk at Modern Botany) Pestle & Mortar I love this boutique brand in its entirety and have been using their Erase & Renew Double Cleanse System, the Vitamin E-rich Pure Hyaluronic Acid serum and Superstar Night Oil for some time (see here …

Ye Olde Bell Spa - The Spa Man

Review: The Spa at Ye Olde Bell, Retford, UK

The Spa at Ye Olde Bell combines warm and friendly service in a brand-new spa that really knows how to treat its guests. With a great range of innovative thermal facilities and welcoming, knowledgeable staff, it exceeded my expectations (and some). Located on the borders of Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and the market town of Retford, the spa is situated adjacent to the historic Ye Olde Bell which is an independently owned 59 room country hotel, dating back to the 17th Century. The Hotel at Ye Olde Bell The hotel is basically an old-style coaching inn that really plays to its historical past. Expect dark oak paneling, plush fabrics, red walls, period features and art from the 17th and 18th centuries. You may even find a four-poster bed in your room. The hotel is of a particular style and the AA Four-Star Rosette hotel has 59 rooms which have all been recently refurbished. Book a room with a roll top bath for the full spa experience. Expect hearty fare in the restaurants and look out …

Meditation and yoga workshops to help prevent male suicide

OHMME has partnered with CALM to run a series of workshops for men which launch in February 2018. CALM is the Campaign Against Living Miserably, and exists to prevent male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. In 2015, 75% of all UK suicides were male. On average that equates to 12 men per day taking their own lives. CALM runs a range of services to support any man who is having a rough time and campaigns that challenge society’s ideals of masculinity. It does some incredible work helping guys to open up, to talk and to confront their fears and problems. Vital work in tackling the huge issue of male suicide. The #StillnessInMotion are workshops have been specifically created for men by Jonty (from the charity), to help dispel societal stereotypes of masculinity, that men should be tough, ‘just deal with it’, and ‘man up’. Spa Experience by Better Male bamboo massage

We’re all spa men now: Half of British men had a male spa treatment in the past year

The male spa market is booming as men really embrace their inner beauty, as Mintel predicts that in total Brits will spend £7.6 billion on treatments in spa, salon and in-store treatment areas in 2017. Male spa is booming according to these figures – and it confirms what I see when I visit salons and spas across the UK. I see more men embracing what’s on offer in the the male spa market. And it seems that men are increasingly calling in the experts for massage and hair removal treatments in particular. New research from Mintel reveals that almost half (47%) of young men have had a treatment in a spa, salon or other treatment area in the past 12 months*, up from one in three (33%) in 2015**. In the past 12 months, 18% of men aged 16-24 have had a massage treatment, up from 11% in 2015, while 18% have had facial hair removal or shaping (up from 8%) and 17% have had body hair removal (up from 6%).
