Penhaligon's Savoy Steam - The Spa Man

Penhaligon’s Savoy Steam: inspired by the steam baths

Penhaligon’s Savoy Steam has a great story. The idea and resulting Eau de Cologne and Eau de Parfum were inspired by the steam baths that were once adjacent to the historic Savoy Hotel in London. Long gone and almost forgotten, the chance discovery of a poster of the steam baths led to a journey by the fragrance and development team at Penhaligon’s whereby they created something brand new. Long story short, this chance discovery led to these new blends. There’s also a nod to a very early fragrance: Hammam Bouquet, 1872 which also provides a stepping point for these delightful fragrances. They are designed to evoke the scent and sensation of steam. Now, quite how you truly capture that in an essence is beyond me. But it’s an excellent inspiration for the fragrance that you now find win these smart bottles. It’s fresh, refreshing and gives you a sense of purpose. I like this on hot steamy days when the air is heavy and you need a light refreshing boost. But you really do need to apply this …

Kiel's Cactus Flower Mist - The Spa Man

The Spa Man’s summer skin essentials for 2017

Summer presents lots of skin challenges, so The Spa Man has curated his set of perfect summer skin essentials. I LOVE IT. It’s soothing and purifying and perfect for daily use. This foaming cleanser will purify the skin without disrupting the skin’s protective function. It gently removes light make-up and impurities, leaving the skin translucent and clean. £32 www.feelunique.com Kiehl’s Cactus Flower and Tibetan Ginseng Hydrating Mist Excellent a an all-round spritz when it’s really hot (keep it in the fridge for an extra cooling action). Olverum Bath Oil - the Spa Man

You need this bath oil in your life (PS: it’s Olverum)

Olverum Bath Oil really is a product you really do need in your life. It’s relaxing, stress-relieving, soothes aches and pains and helps to clear the head too. Regular readers will know that I love to bathe. It’s one of the few times I truly stop. I put down the iPhone and iPad, step away from the computer and stop. I might light a candle, play some music and occasionally will read a magazine. But one constant is an excellent bath oil formulated with the very best quality essential oils. Olverum Bath Oil is one such oil. It’s a heady mix of potent oils that pack a punch. You don’t need much – they say 5ml is plenty and thus, it spreads the cost and makes it a reasonable purchase and quite pocket friendly. It has a carefully selected range of botanical oils and plant extracts that is unisex and perfect after a long hard day in the office. This blend has been around since 1931 when it was developed in Germany. Give yourself a little me-time right now. …

Spa Wars - ITVBe

Spa Wars comes to ITVBe

It had to happen: Spa Wars is a brand new competitive beauty series on ITVBe that pitches three rival salons owners against each other to find out whose treatments offer the best value for money. Im not quite sure how enthusiastic I am about this. Will it be compelling TV or car-crash telly? I guess it’s more salon wars (from what I can gather) and not truly based in the spa. I guess it will be nail scissors at dawn and its likely to get bitchy. Voiced by television personality Rylan Clark-Neal, each episode sees three local beauticians take it in turns to visit each other’s salons, where they are plumped, preened and pampered to perfection before deciding how much they’re willing to pay for their treatments. At the end of all three visits, the salon that’s been paid the highest percentage of their total bill is crowned that week’s Spa Wars Winner. These results are revealed to them by a surprise guest celebrity! It seems to mimic the Four in a bed series. We …

Banya No.1 London - The Spa Man

Review: Traditional Russian Banya at Banya No.1 London

Tucked away on a quiet little back street in Shoreditch is the traditional Russian Spa, Banya No. 1. Offering a truly authentic take on the Banya experience, it’s all about the sauna and you are assured of getting all hot and sweaty. Most guests come to try the Parenie treatment which is set in the specially designed sauna. You literally lay down on the sauna bench and get whipped with leaves until your blood boils. It’s much more pleasurable than it sounds and it is a gentle therapy (to start) with light tapping of the leaves (mostly oak) accords the body. The banchik uses the leaves the gather hot air from the sauna and wave this across the body. Focussing on the back, legs and then feet, it’s somewhat soothing and comforting to begin with, then your body temperature starts to rise. Resting your head on the beech with a pillow of eucalypt and birch branches, these have been dipped on cool water and give a little relief. It’s when the focus shifts to the …

Many spas are actively participating in the global day of celebration with events and activities promoting healthy eating, fitness, meditation and wellness in general.   Global Wellness Day Global Wellness Day is an entirely not-for-profit day, a social project created by volunteers dedicated to living well. Tasmanian Tiger Massage Balm by Beauty and the Bees - the Spa Man

Tasmanian Tiger Massage Balm beats medicated muscles gels by a mile

Seriously, The Tasmanian Tiger Massage Balm has helped to ease pain and muscle ache (plus knee pain) far better than any medicated muscle gel I’ve tried. I’ve put it to the test against Emugel and Iburprofen Gel and it works equally well, and actually better, because it’s not using drugs. This rich solid aromatic balm is formulated with Tasmania’s newest native essential oil, Kunzea (a member of the melaleauca family) which is certified and licensed by the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Authority, Australia). It’s topically applied as pain relief and helps massage away muscular aches and pains. It’s better than oil as it stays in one place! Great as a warming after-sports or workout rub. It’s a potent smell, very aromatic, almost pungent, but boy does it work a treat. The balm format, with beeswax, takes more time than oil alone to penetrate the skin leaving its benefits in contact with the skin longer. I massage a small amount of the Tasmanian Tiger Massage Balm into the area needed and make sure that I really work it in. …

Vair Spa at Borgo Egnazia - The Spa Man

Review: Vair Spa at Borgo Egnazia, Italy

Pioneering a psycho-emotional approach to spa, the team at Vair Spa at Borgo Egnazia has created an award-winning wellness offering that focusses on happiness, drawing on the culture and traditions of Puglia, Italy. Choosing to visit a wellness destination that bills itself as a psycho-emotional spa raises just as many questions as it does gives answers. I will guide you through my experiences. It was truly life-changing. Deeply rooted in the traditions of Puglia, the resort and hotel of Borgo Egnazia has been designed as a traditional local village constructed from tuff stone and is surrounded by millennia-old olive groves. It subtly blends old world charm with hidden contemporary touches that gives the property a true sense of place in the heart of the Italian countryside. You may have read about it in the press already. The hotel shot to fame in 2012 when Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel chose the property for their exclusive celebrity wedding. Beyond the notoriety of the celebrity press, the hotel and spa have received numerous international accolades. But its how it …

LUX* Belle Mare Pool - The Spa Man

Review: LUX* Belle Mare, Mauritius

Modern, light and airy, LUX* Belle Mare is a welcoming hotel, refurbished by designer Kelly Hoppen and is quite contemporary in its look, but remains comfortable and homely at the same time.  The taupe palette used throughout ensures that the decor has raised the bar for Mauritian hotels and will stand the test of time in the design stakes. The resort boasts the largest pool on the island which is at the heart of the hotel complex.  It has four stunning restaurants which not only offer plenty of choice for informal dining by the sea but they excel in more high cuisine at the Indian smart by Vincent or the fabulous modern Chinese Duck Laundry. The food was excellent. Staff are personable, friendly and efficient and always on hand to help. Highlights, like at any LUX* property include Café LUX*, ICI for delicious homemade ice creams in the afternoon and the Rolls Royce food cart in the gardens. It’s the unique touches that make LUX* resorts so special and truly memorable. The beach scene is more …

New Caudalie Boutique Spa opens in South London

Caudalie brings a taste of France to South London with the opening of its new Caudalie Boutique Spa. Situated on the well-healed shopping street of Northcote Road in Wandsworth, the store has two treatment rooms and extends the growing reputation of the brand in the UK. This new boutique spa brings a taste of that with its unique version of vinotherapy to the streets of South London. You will find all of the brand hero products tastefully displayed in this modern, welcoming location. Nordic sauna Center Parcs Sherwood Forest

The best saunas with a view in the UK

Saunas have been popular for years and saunas with a view really are something special. Much more preferable than a closed, dark box room, now the trend in sauna design is to open them up, add windows and provide stunning views across the rest of the spa area and to the landscape beyond. Saunas with a view of natures, the forest, rivers or the seaside make the whole experience much more enjoyable. The Finnish discovered that pouring water over heated rocks in a small enclosed room created a very hot, dry heat – the sauna. An essential component of any good spa, saunas come with a variety of benefits for the guest.   Saunas can cleanse the skin, increase circulation, open up the airways and sinuses, ease muscle and rheumatic pain, strengthen the immune system, improve joint movement and act as a great stress release for tension. Sweating opens up the pores, lets out toxins and impurities and increases circulation. A sauna can also speed recovery time for injuries such as strains, sprains, arthritis and muscular pain. Here is The Spa …

Rites for Life - Anne Lewis

I experienced an energy session with Anne Lewis, facilitator of Rites for Life

When I was in Sydney earlier this year I was introduced to Anne Lewis, facilitator of Rites for Life. Anne is an unassuming woman with a gentle manner and calming presence. Her one-to-one sessions are renowned amongst those in the know and definitely something to seek out for those in need of balance and rejuvenation. Sessions combine energy work that focuses on the chakras and meridian lines. But each session is totally unique and I guess they would be different each time too, depending on your needs, state of mind and current physical, mental and spiritual situation. At the time, I had been travelling quite a bit, was a touch jet lagged and felt rather tired. My session included some vibrational energy work which focussed on the stomach, where I hold stress. She instantly identified this weak spot for me and spent much of her time releasing the energy flow in this area and spent some time focussing on the liver too. I felt an incredible release and an expansion of the whole torso. Combing some conversation and discussion with …

Blue Lagoon Iceland

Review: Blue Lagoon, Iceland

The famous waters of the Blue Lagoon in Iceland are rich in minerals and algae that are excellent for time out, relaxation, healing and skin conditions. Famed for its blue-tinged geothermal seawater (which hovers around 37-39 degrees Celsius), you can bath outside, breathing in the pure fresh air of the Arctic Circle. It is a most incredible experience, and one which was made more amazing for me when combined with an in-water massage. Positioned on a floating mattress and covered with a blanket (yes, in the water), I was expertly manipulated and massaged until I drifted into a state of pure bliss. It was snowing and zero degrees, but I was completely unaware of the outside elements. This really did set itself apart from any other treatment I have ever had. It only lasted 30 minutes, but it seemed like an eternity. Afterwards I was left to float around the lagoon, experience the steam cabin, sauna rooms and the exhilarating waterfall massage. Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater is a part of a unique system where Iceland’s …
