Thai spice for your skin

THE STORY: Stick with me on this – yes it does use Thai ingredients and what you really get the most is the lemongrass. But it’s not like ladelling your dinner on your face, it’s like being on a sun soaked beach in Thailand. And it lasts. I tested the Cedarwood & Lemongrass Daily Defence Moisturiser for Men (50ml) by Borealis Natural Skincare whilst on holiday in Sitges. It’s zingy, zesty and if you like lemongrass, you will love this. It’s hydrating enough without leaving the skin claggy or overly oily. THE SCIENCE: It’s a rich, hydrating blend containing cold pressed Rosehip Oil, which is quite well-known for its excellent skin repairing properties, Hempseed and Red Raspberry Seed Oil can help nourish and provide some natural protection from UVA/UVB sun damage. Infused with woody Cedarwood, uplifting Lemongrass and citrus Orange that is ever so subtly complemented with musky Patchouli. I’m not a huge fan of Patchouli – but didn’t really notice it. No parabens, SLS, petrochemicals, artificial fragrances, preservatives or additives. THE VERDICT: Nice for …

Dermalogica launches MultiVitamin Power Serum

Dermalogica’s new MultiVitamin Power Serum is a a brand new super-serum that has got multi-tasking down to a fine art. It does the lot! It’s primary goal is to address the critical skin changes associated with ageing. Candice Gardner, Education Curriculum Manager explains the background to the new development, ‘Serums are becoming increasingly popular due to their fast results. High impact formulas are excellent as they create skin change in a relatively short time frame’. THE SCIENCE: The new serum expands Dermalogica’s AGE smart® line with the use of Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR), a newly patented retinoid to reverse the signs of ageing without typical retinoid sensitivity.  MultiVitamin Power Serum is boosted by the use of stabilised vitamin technology and peptides that dramatically improves skin function. It provides concentrated doses of Vitamins A, C, and E which have been encapsulated in 2nd generation advanced liposomes for deeper delivery into the skin. Designed as the day time companion for the Overnight Repair Serum, MultiVitamin Power Serum has a host of additional benefits as Candice Gardner explains, ‘From …

Germaine de Capuccini for Men – Energy Eyes Roll-on

THE STORY: Eye creams and gels marketed at men are plentiful. But the simple act of unscrewing a lid, squeezing the gel on your finger and applying to the eye area is yet one more thing to add into a grooming routine. For me – it’s often a step too far. I do it for a week and then promptly forget. The advent of roll-on eye products is a god-send. Unscrew the lid and roll-on. Done. So in the name of research I have committed to a months trial of Germaine de Capuccini for Men Energy Eyes Roll-On. Light, fresh and easy to use, it’s anti-ageing and designed to target the signs of tiredness and wrinkles around the eyes. The roller is cooling on application and you know what – I can truly, honestly see the difference to my wrinkles. They are smoother, look less pronounced and (generally being a bit of a cynic) am well and truly sold. THE SCIENCE: Contains Micro-Dermoxine complex that works to reduce the length and depth of wrinkles. Caffeine …

Breakfast Smoothie for your skin

THE STORY: Temple Spa Breakfast Smoothie is designed for normal skin and is a smooth, creamy facial scrub that gently and effectively lifts dead skin, leaving it fresh and clean. It smells really fruity and delicious and if it were served in a glass, I would scoff it for brekkie. I’ve been known to apply it and leave it as a mask treatment (when I have time). THE SCIENCE: Apricot Oil – moisturising and nourishing Honey – softening and smoothing Jojoba Oil – moisturising and reduces moisture loss Oat Seed Extract – soothing and calming Pear and Apple – clarifying Papaya – softens and refines the skin Strawberry – skin brightening and astringent Orange Oil – refreshing and stimulating THE VERDICT: Works as good as it smells. I use it sparingly as I don’t want it to run out. THE DETAILS: 100ml – £22 www.templespa.com

A super little face (and beard) wash

THE STORY: We all know we have to wash our faces – but as beards are very much in vogue it’s timely to remember that they need a good wash too – every day. I’ve been giving Pevonia Botanica Spa Care for Him Aqua Gel Foaming Cleanser (long name) a go over the past few weeks. An excellent face wash – it’s perfect for the beard too. It has a gentle foam – but doesn’t go overboard, a light aromatic scent and washes away quickly and easily. It leaves the skin (and beard) clean and fresh. THE SCIENCE: Green Tea is a natural antioxidant, Lavender is uplifting and adds to the fresh aroma (as does Patchouli and Lemon Verbena) and the oats and amino acids help make this a hydrating face cleanser. THE VERDICT: Clean your beard and face with this now! THE DETAILS: £30 for 200ml www.pevonia.co.uk

U Little Beauty

THE STORY: U Little Beauty Clay Facial Cleansing Mask is something I picked up at the Natural Products Europe Trade Show. It hails from Australia and its name is a popular catch phrase Down Under. The face mask promises a detoxifying, cleansing and revitalising end result. Clay based with a host of berries, native Kakadu Plum, green tea, lemon and rosemary oil, it’s got all the right ingredients and was a nice little mask to use once a week. It left my skin hydrated and feeling cleansed. THE SCIENCE: Kaolin Clay is often used in masks to draw out impurities. Kakadu Plum is a natural source of concentrated Vitamin C. Said to be 50 times stronger than oranges, native to Australia’s Northern Territory, it assists collagen production, is rich in antioxidants tackling free radical damage. Bilberries – nourish the skin Green Tea – antioxidant Lemon and rosemary oil – detoxifying and cleansing Also contains orange and chamomile essential oils and Oak Bark Extract. THE VERDICT: A super little face mask to use once a week. …

The Spa Man’s favourite: exfoliating cleansers

Cleansers come in all shapes and sizes and the men’s market has produced some excellent ones in the past year or so. They combine the benefits of a cleanser, usually with micro-exfoliation particles – giving you a gentle scrub and an effective cleanse too. Here are my favourites. Clarins Men Exfoliating Cleanser An award winning launch from Clarins Men, the 2 in 1 exfoliating cleanser is creamy, smooth and peppered with micro-beads to gently exfoliate the skin. It’s soap-free and helps reduce the drying effects of hard water on the skin. Refreshing and simple to use in the shower, this one deserves the accolades it’s been getting. 125ml – £21 www.clarins.co.uk Trilogy for Men Face Wash and Scrub Yes, it combines a face wash and a scrub, but it’s really an exfoliating cleanser. Creamy, soft and a great one to have in the shower. It doesn’t strip the skin of essential oils and leaves it feeling clean and smooth. Contains zinc, copper and magnesium to boost the skin. It’s natural and comes from New Zealand. …

Clinique for Men Dark Spot Corrector

THE STORY: Clinique Skin Supplies for Men has been around for years and has long led the pack in terms of grooming products and launches. So, staying true to form it has launched Dark Spot Corrector. This serum utilises the technology in Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector to help reduce dark spots, pigmentation and some aspects of sun-damage. What’s even more interesting is that this also adds in extra benefits including anti-inflammatory ingredients to calm skin that has been irritated by shaving. It’s also said to be good for ingrown hairs and works on post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (melanocytes in the skin go into overdrive causing pigmentation) due to skin irritation and ingrown hairs. THE SCIENCE: Ever heard the phrase – blinded by the science. Well, there’s so much science here – it’s almost mind blowing. The key breakthrough is CL-302 Complex (plant derived) that improves the skin tone, radiance and clarity. This contains (amongst other things) Glucosamine and Salicylic Acid that work to exfoliate the skin’s surface and encourage cell renewal. It also contains: Blackout …

Korres Black Pine Serum

THE STORY: Korres has launched a new anti-ageing, anti-wrinkle serum. Black Pine Serum is based on Black Pine extract – a rich source of polyphenols that helps to firm and tone the skin. It’s a thick serum that borders on being a light gel. It absorbs easily, sits well under any moisturiser and I used it in the morning (and at night when I remembered). THE SCIENCE: Stick with me – I found it a little complicated and have tried to really simplify it. Connective tissue is constantly being renewed through protein synthesis and the partial degradation of those proteins by metalloproteinases (MMPs). Black Pine polyphenol has been shown to regulate MMPs thus helping to maintain skin tone and texture. Hyaluronic acid – helps hydration Black Tea – restores skin volume Oat polysaccharides – skin firming and volume Hexapeptide 11 – firms skin and increases elasticity Soy fibres – boost collagen And there’s a lot more that work in synergy to make this a super-serum. THE VERDICT: I like the texture, the feeling on my …

It’s must be Manotox

THE STORY: Yes, it had to come along one day – Manotox (I only kick myself that I didn’t think of it first). It’s a new plumping, firming moisturiser that promises anti-ageing in an instant – yes it’s basically botox in a bottle for men. OK, it isn’t going to freeze your face – it’s got a sprinkle of clever marketing with some great anti-ageing ingredients and hey presto –  you’ve got a winner. Nip+ Man is a brand new line that has done extensive research into the men’s grooming market, understands what drives guys in their grooming habits and thus – the capsule range was born. It’s already gaining in popularity amongst the gym-set and has just launched in Boots – so look out I predict this is going to be big. THE SCIENCE: Two key ingredients: LIFTONIN® works to minimise the appearance of fine lines + wrinkles. Gransil + sea minerals smooth + revitalise, for fresher looking skin. THE VERDICT: I liked it, it made my skin look fresher and more alive. THE …

Totally Taranaki

THE STORY:  I discovered this gem of a face masque in an art gallery in Taranaki, New Zealand. Using the very best of local ingredients, in particular the volcanic mineral clay, Tailor Masque harnesses the properties of Bentonite Clay (more about that below). So, whilst touring the Govett Brewster Gallery in Taranaki (check it out – it’s fab) I was given a little sachet sample of the face mask. It travelled half way around the world in my soap bag (forgotten and unloved) until last week. I found it, reminisced about my trip to New Zealand and then promptly applied the mask. It was cooling and felt like it was doing some good. I left it on for about 10 minutes (whilst resting in a hot bath). Upon removal my skin looked hydrated and much healthier. I am sure a pot of this would have me looking tip top. THE SCIENCE: Bentonite Clay is an ancient volcanic ash deposit and Tailor Skincare sources it in New Zealand. A member of the Smecite clay family this clay works …

Pore-fect

THE STORY: I have ALWAYS suffered from open pores on my nose and really hated it. They are enlarged, prone to gathering dirt (which makes them even larger) and despite a good cleansing regime and using daily face wash, regularly exfoliation and quality moisturisers, they remain mahoosive! I was recently sent a sample of a new skincare range from Bioderma – the Sébium Pore Refiner. I thought I would give it a trial run (but to be honest thought it would dry my skin, with the effect lasting little more than a day). Ok, the first couple of days, I did think it was drying my skin – but after a couple of weeks it has settled back to normal. You apply it under your normal moisturiser. It works to contract the open pores and keeps then that way all day. So, it’s only temporary you say. I thought the same, after quite stunning results I gave the product a rest and after 4 days off, the skin remains fairly healthy looking. They weren’t quite …

Germaine de Capuccini For Men

THE STORY: Germaine de Capuccini is Spain’s largest spa brand and is in some great spa locations across the UK (Clarice House and Daffodil Spa). You might not know too much about the range or that the line has a rather classy “For Men” range too. It’s sleek, smartly packaged and focusses squarely on clean skin and anti-ageing. In fact it takes anti-ageing quite seriously. THE SCIENCE: Germaine de Capuccini For Men features ingredients like: Birch Sap – a natural extract with trace elements (Zinc, Magnesium, Silicon) vitamins that hydrate, tone and help skin suppleness. Olive Leaf Extract – rebalances skin sebum levels Vitamin C – boosts circulation and skin health Sake Extract – Anti-ageing and wrinkle reducing And some unique discoveries like FR·OXIDEFENSE, Micro-Dermoxine Complex, Eashave (in fact the list goes on and on). KEY PRODUCTS: Age Resist: provides a sheild effect against environmental agressions, ageing and fatigue and includes FR·OXIDEFENSE to protect against free radicals. Hydra Elements: A super-hydrating cream that improves the ydration and tone of the skin for normal and dry …

Best face cream for men: ThalgoMen Regenerating Cream Review - The Spa Man

Best face cream for men: Thalgo Men Regenerating Cream

THE STORY: Spending a month in the heat of the Australian sun puts any skin cream to the test and for my bi-annual pilgrimage home I decided to trial Thalgo Men Regenerating Cream. I like a lot of things about this moisturiser. The consistency is fairly thick which ensures it applies well and gives the feeling of a good coverage. It’s got a light marine-like scent, but definitely subtle as I’m not a huge fan of scented face creams – this passed that hurdle. I always felt hydrated and protected which is exactly what it promises. Best face cream for men? Thalgo is a bit of an unsung hero in the men’s grooming arena. I visited the head quarters in Southern France in 2014 to check out the production facilities and the research and development is all done in-house. The men’s range is a capsule collection – but has everything you need. I am also a big fan of the shaving gel and the ThalgoMen Intensive Hydrating Cream which is an ultra-fresh, blue non-sticky gel that …

Deep Moisture

THE STORY: Dr Perricone is a doctor from the States who knows a thing or two about skin. He’s just launched Perricone MD Deep Moisture Therapy which is destined to become a hero product as it’s a rescue remedy for dry, dehydrated skin. Full of anti-oxidants, it also helps calm inflamed skin too. After the first application I could really feel a difference. This isn’t just any high street moisturiser (and the price confirms that). THE SCIENCE: Deep Moisture Therapy has been formulated with Palm oil, Borage oil and Coconut Oil – all contain a natural compound of Tocotrienols (which is both hydrating and anti-ageing).  Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C ester lock in moisture and give the skin a boost. Dr Perricone’s patented delivery system allows nutrients to absorb instantly. THE VERDICT: It’s super-hydrating and feels like its creating a protective layer on the skin. THE DETAILS: 59ml – £69.50 www.perriconemd.co.uk and www.johnlewis.com
