COMO Shambhala London - The Spa Man

National Spa Week 2016

It’s that time of the year once again when you can abandon all guilt and book a spa treatment, or pull out all the stops and book a spa break. Why? Because it’s National Spa Week and there’s some great deals and offers to be had. Running from 31st October to 4th November, National Spa Week celebrates UK spas and salons by putting them in the spotlight for one dedicated week, giving them the opportunity to showcase the many real physical and emotional health benefits of the treatments that they offer to the UK public. National Spa Week 2016 Participating spas and salons will be providing some fantastic offers and promotions on a range of treatments so that you can discover for yourself why regularly visiting a spa is a necessary personal investment, not just a one off ‘treat’. I’m booked into Ockenden Manor to celebrate the week too – to experience a new Elemental Herbology signature treatment (the brand has just launched at the spa). The main aim of Spa Week is to promote the many health …

Soak Steam Dream Roca Gallery

Soak, Steam, Dream: Reinventing Bathing Culture

Soak, Steam, Dream: Reinventing Bathing Culture 16 September 2016 – 28 January 2017 Admission free Soak, Steam, Dream: Reinventing Bathing Culture is a new exhibition that explores a new communal bathing culture through the work of contemporary architects and designers. The exhibition is part of the 2016 London Design Festival and features international bathhouse projects by Peter Zumthor, Skene Catling de la Peña, H3T architekti and Kengo Kuma. These all re-imagine the bathhouse as a social space, factoring in smart water use for the 21st century. This is particularly exciting for The Spa Man, as it’s rare that spa and bathing culture receives this kind of public platform. This is especially interesting given that we are witnessing a return to traditional forms of bathing and a renewed interest in communal bathing traditions. Curator Jane Withers says, ‘There has been an extraordinarily rich architecture and culture associated with communal bathing since ancient times. With the arrival of the private bathroom and a more clinical approach to sanitation and wellbeing, we have lost this leisurely sense of the …

Dolphin Square launches Arabian Beard Ritual - The Spa Man

Arabian Beard Ritual launches at The Spa at Dolphin Square

Developed in response to the current popularity of beards, I’m pleased to hear that the Moroccan themed Spa at Dolphin Square has developed a new Arabian Beard Ritual treatment to exclusively cater for its bearded clients. Set to launch on June 1st, the Arabian Beard Ritual is the brainchild of Dolphin Square’s Marketing Manager, Ricardo Faria Ornelas, who came up with concept based on the proven hygiene benefits of beard grooming. “The fact that facial hair is very course means that beards are likely to trap dirt and harbour germs which can lead to skin infections” Ricardo comments. “With this in mind, it is important to keep both the beard and the surrounding skin clean to maximise facial hygiene”. The Arabian Beard Ritual The 25 minute treatment starts with a cleansing ritual using Savon Noir soap to remove dead skin cells, leaving a smoother and brighter complexion. Part of the Spa’s traditional Moroccan Hammam ritual, Savoir Noir soap contains black olives and is rich in vitamin E, helping to soften and nourish the skin. Hot towels are then …

Burger King opens spa in Finland The Spa Man

Burger King spa opens in Finland

It’s only natural that a Burger King spa opens in Finland – right? It’s the traditional home of the sauna. The Fins are renowned throughout the world for their rugged approach to getting hot and steamy and then jumping in a freezing lake. Some run around in the snow. So the news that Burger King, yes you heard it right, Burger King has opened a spa in Finland’s capital, Helsinki is not that surprising. It’s reported to be a fully functioning spa that’s an add-on to the burger joint which will allow patrons to eat their burgers and fries in a sauna capable of seating up to 15 people. And it doesn’t stop there, there is a range of high-tech add ons. The red and blue benches in the sauna pick out the chains logo and create a bright and breezy look, designed by Finnish designer Teuvo Loman. The spa area also features a 48-inch TV for viewing movies, as well as a gaming lounge, complete with 55-inch TV and a Playstation 4 console. You can even …

Humorous video of spa etiquette in Iceland

The tourist board for Iceland, Visit Iceland has launched a tongue in cheek video showing the spa etiquette required for spa-ing in the country. I have watched this humorous video of spa etiquette in Iceland a few times and it still makes me laugh. Iceland really is a magical place to spa, I’ve been to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland before and absolutely loved it. I had one of my most memorable spa experiences there. So, for this funny guide to spa in Iceland, you can watch the video below. Produced through its Iceland Academy online “training course,” it aims to teach tourists the basics of a spa visit to Iceland, ensuring they make the most of their time in the country. I think that it should be shown in spas right across the world too. I absolutely love the new video which teaches visitors about Iceland’s hot tub etiquette. It’s introduced by a local known as Gudmundur,  who is head of spa etiquette. Gudmundur stands next to a naked man in a shower, and proceeds to demonstrate how to properly get …

The Spa Spies review over 100 spas every year and complete a detailed audit sheet that covers all aspects of the spa from service and facilities to cleanliness and maintenance. It goes to show, I’ve only been to a couple of these locations, which demonstrates just how many spas there are in the UK.
