Grooming tips with coconut oil

So we all know of the health benefits of coconut oil, I cook with it and eat it in my porridge and have been known to pop a spoon full into my nutribullet.  But the benefits for grooming and beauty remain relatively undiscovered until now. They have been the preserve of a few devotees but coconut oil is going mainstream as an essential part of the grooming ritual. Vita Coco is one of the UK’s leading brands and is renowned for its coconut water, which naturally led onto our great love of coconut oil. Organic, 100% raw, extra-virgin and cold-pressed, Vita Coco is pure, good for you and trades directly with coconut growers, ensuring you get the very best quality oil.        I spoke to Liz Taw, Vita Coco Ambassador, who is also a grooming expert for some top tips on how to use coconut oil as part of a male grooming regime.  1. Use it as a hydrating oil to shave with. Either on its own or as a pre-shave prior to gel, …

Body hair debate: men feel the pressure for a smooth finish

It seems the pressure to be hair-free is growing, according to new research from Mintel which found that half (50%) of all Brits admit there is more pressure for men to remove or groom body hair. The statistics mirror the boom in male grooming with more men primping and preening to look their very best. Smooth finish Over the last 12 months, some 55% of men say they have removed hair from their head, this is followed by the pubic region at 29%, chest at 13%, underarms at 12%, back at 9%, bottom at 6%, arms at 5%, legs at 4% and feet 2%. Just 30% of men say they have not removed hair from their body in the last year. Additionally, Mintel’s research highlights how Britain’s men are giving Cara a run for her money, with a quarter (25%) admitting to removing hair from their eyebrows. The body hair debate A hairy body is the next frontier and many brands are capitalising on the trend for manscaping. Research released by Braun revealed that 62% …

A super little hand serum

I have never found a hand cream to date that doesn’t feel sticky, tacky on my skin. I don’t like the residue feeling on my skin. If my hands are really dry, I will apply a little at night before bed, that was until the launch of this little wonder – Bodhi & Birch has developed a cool hand serum. The Lime Blossom Protecting Hand Serum is light and fabulously fragrant. As it’s oil based, one squirt is all you need. And surpisingly, even though it’s oil based, it’s not at all oily on the skin. It feels silky and smooth and within seconds your hands are refreshed and you can get on with your day. Excellent used directly after washing your hands and a god send after working in the garden. It’s made from Olive Squalane which is a botanical lipid derived from olives. It contains a unique antioxidant that protects skin from free-radical damage, replenishes skin squalene to keep it moisturised and help diminish blemishes, age spots and lines. Olive Squalane is combined …

Bodhi unveils new branding

Bodhi is one of those brands that I really rate. I love the ethos, the packaging and the product. Now, after just three years it has rebranded as Bodhi & Birch. I am currently loving the Pep Noir Shower Gel – it’s spicy and peppery and has a great texture, so you don’t lose half of it before you can apply it to your body. It’s the perfect start to the day. Don’t know Bodhi? It draws on a mix of Eastern and Western skincare and wellbeing philosophies, with some additional inspiration from the healing power of nature and traditional botanical remedies. Made in England, Bodhi & Birch products are expertly blended using natural ingredients ethically sourced from sustainable origins. I love how the brand uses an unusualy and heady mix of essential oils and active botanicals. It’s truly distinctive. The entire range is designed to stimulate the regeneration of healthy skin and maintain it at optimum levels. I haven’t tried any of the facial skincare range to date (which is quite comprehensive) but it’s …

Brilliant face masks

Once a week the general advice is to treat your skin to a face mask. Cleanse the skin, exfoliate and apply. Choose one according to what your skin needs – whether it’s to calm, nourish or reduce oil or regulate sebum. It’s an easy process and I always do it in the bath (although purists might suggest the heat from the bath counters the benefits). Below is my pick of three of the best face masks of the moment. ishga Exfoliating Face Mask This uses grains of milled seaweed to gently exfoliate too. It is packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and trace elements and is recognised for its ability to revitalize, repair, and moisturise giving a feeling of new skin. £35 – www.ishga.co.uk Elemis Post Shave Recovery Mask Designed specifically for men the Post Shave Recovery Mask is a fast-acting facial mask, that helps calm the irritation of blemishes and minor shaving nicks, whilst actively reducing skin sensitivity or shaving burn and restoring vital nutrients lost during shaving. £28 – www.timetospa.co.uk Spa Find Energizing Mud …

The five a day debate

Once again the debate about our recommended intake of fruit and vegetables is on the agenda. New research from University College London and University of Liverpool is encouraging us to increase our intake of fruit and vegetables. 7 a day is being touted with suggestions that up to 10 will bring the most benefits. Eating more fruit and vegetables is good for your health and decreases the risk of dying from a whole range of diseases including heart disease and cancer. The new UCL study reports that eating seven or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day reduces your risk of death at any point in time by 42% compared to eating less than one portion. Ths new push (which is not yet endorsed by the government) follows the advice in the USA and Australia. Australia suggests 2+5 which equates to 2 portions of fruit and 5 of vegetables. The UCL study took a swipe at fruit juice and canned and frozen fruit, revealing that fruit juice offered little benefit and that canned fruit …

BA launches new inflight amenities

Travel in BA Club World (I’m waiting for my ticket) and you will find that Elemis has introduced a new and exclusive in-flight amenities collection, one for him and one for her. I love an amenities kit and I usually have to put my own together of little sachets and sample/travel sized products to see me through a long-haul flight. Long haul it’s all about hydration. The air is dry, your skin dries out and you often knock back a few drinks and pass on the water. So this great little compact kit from Elemis solves all the problems. So if you are cashed up enough to fly Club World then look out for the  Elemis kits which will ensure your skin is fresh, revived and rehydrated during a long-haul flight.   MEN’S SHAVE: Skin Soothe Shave Gel formulated with soothing aloe vera and cooling peppermint provides the smoothest shave for even the most sensitive skins. HYDRATE:  Elemis’ hero anti-ageing Pro-Collagen Marine Cream is clinically proven to hydrate and boost firmness. REVIVE LIPS: Apply Ultra …

A year in the life of The Spa Man

It’s been a year since the soft launch of The Spa Man. I have travelled the world, been pummelled to within an inch of my life and stayed at some of the worlds best hotels and spas. It has been amazing, but I feel like I have only scratched the surface of the world of spa. 2014 is shaping up to be great. Here’s an infographic look back at 2014.

Pro shave with Philips

Electric shavers are a great gift for the hard to buy for Dad, brother or brother-in-law. Whilst I tend to wet shave most of the time, when I travel (with hand baggage) an electric shaver will travel with me in the cabin, whilst a blade often gets confiscated. So, for a short haul hand baggage only trip, it’s an electric shaver for me. So, I got to try the Philips PT920 PowerTouch Pro Shaver from John Lewis. Charge it fully in just 1 hour (bonus), to enjoy up to 60+ minutes of cordless power (which means you can walk around, drink your tea and watch TV whilst you shave). What’s quite cool is that when you forget to re-charge, there’s a 3 minutes quick charge provides enough power for one shave. Adjusting to the contours of your face it’s designed to give a really close shave – and I can confirm that’s very true. Nice to hold, good clean finish and all-in-all it’s a good shaver. When it comes down to the nitty gritty, I …

Postcard from Milan

If you believe the guidebooks then you may think that Milan is little more than an industrial city, the financial hub of Italy and one great big catwalk of high-end fashion boutiques. It may not have the big tourist pull of Rome or Florence, but that’s why I like it. I’ve been to Milan twice this year and it’s truly managed to get under my skin. A cosmopolitan city that oozes style (it is the fashion capital of the world after all), it’s refined and cultured, and the Milanese are effortlessly cool and stylish. It’s attractions may not be as immediately obvious, but that’s part of the attraction. Home to Da Vinci’s The Last Supper, the Duomo, an array of modern art galleries and every designer brand you could ever want, you can’t come to this city without sampling it’s fabulous food – you must try the Milanese risotto infused with saffron. My picks of top things to do: Visit: Villa Necchi Campiglio – the 1930’s built villa used in the film “I am Love” …
