Global Wellness Day - The Spa Man

Celebrate Global Wellness Day – 10th June 2017

First celebrated in 2012, Global Wellness Day was established in Turkey as the “first” day dedicated to living well, and has now become a world-wide annual event. This year it takes place on 10th June 2017 and joins people in the shared values of wanting to be healthier, to look better, and to live well both physically and spiritually. Living well is the shared dream across the globe. The thinking behind Global Wellness Day is to embrace and celebrate our health and wellbeing, but also to promote this. Highlighting the benefits of living well, there is a team of ambassadors who are the guiding lights of the event. Many spas are actively participating in the global day of celebration with events and activities promoting healthy eating, fitness, meditation and wellness in general.   Global Wellness Day Global Wellness Day is an entirely not-for-profit day, a social project created by volunteers dedicated to living well. The purpose of Global Wellness Day is to ask the question, even if for just one day, “How can I live a healthier …

Tasmanian Tiger Massage Balm by Beauty and the Bees - the Spa Man

Tasmanian Tiger Massage Balm beats medicated muscles gels by a mile

Seriously, The Tasmanian Tiger Massage Balm has helped to ease pain and muscle ache (plus knee pain) far better than any medicated muscle gel I’ve tried. I’ve put it to the test against Emugel and Iburprofen Gel and it works equally well, and actually better, because it’s not using drugs. This rich solid aromatic balm is formulated with Tasmania’s newest native essential oil, Kunzea (a member of the melaleauca family) which is certified and licensed by the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Authority, Australia). It’s topically applied as pain relief and helps massage away muscular aches and pains. It’s better than oil as it stays in one place! Great as a warming after-sports or workout rub. It’s a potent smell, very aromatic, almost pungent, but boy does it work a treat. The balm format, with beeswax, takes more time than oil alone to penetrate the skin leaving its benefits in contact with the skin longer. I massage a small amount of the Tasmanian Tiger Massage Balm into the area needed and make sure that I really work it in. …

Nordic sauna Center Parcs Sherwood Forest

The best saunas with a view in the UK

Saunas have been popular for years and saunas with a view really are something special. Much more preferable than a closed, dark box room, now the trend in sauna design is to open them up, add windows and provide stunning views across the rest of the spa area and to the landscape beyond. Saunas with a view of natures, the forest, rivers or the seaside make the whole experience much more enjoyable. The Finnish discovered that pouring water over heated rocks in a small enclosed room created a very hot, dry heat – the sauna. An essential component of any good spa, saunas come with a variety of benefits for the guest.   Saunas can cleanse the skin, increase circulation, open up the airways and sinuses, ease muscle and rheumatic pain, strengthen the immune system, improve joint movement and act as a great stress release for tension. Sweating opens up the pores, lets out toxins and impurities and increases circulation. A sauna can also speed recovery time for injuries such as strains, sprains, arthritis and muscular pain. Here is The Spa …

Rites for Life - Anne Lewis

I experienced an energy session with Anne Lewis, facilitator of Rites for Life

When I was in Sydney earlier this year I was introduced to Anne Lewis, facilitator of Rites for Life. Anne is an unassuming woman with a gentle manner and calming presence. Her one-to-one sessions are renowned amongst those in the know and definitely something to seek out for those in need of balance and rejuvenation. Sessions combine energy work that focuses on the chakras and meridian lines. But each session is totally unique and I guess they would be different each time too, depending on your needs, state of mind and current physical, mental and spiritual situation. At the time, I had been travelling quite a bit, was a touch jet lagged and felt rather tired. My session included some vibrational energy work which focussed on the stomach, where I hold stress. She instantly identified this weak spot for me and spent much of her time releasing the energy flow in this area and spent some time focussing on the liver too. I felt an incredible release and an expansion of the whole torso. Combing some conversation and discussion with …

Akasha Holistic Wellbeing Centre

Reiki with Bernice Robinson

Bernice Robinson: Holistic Reiki Master & Crystal Healer There is a first time to experience everything in life and I headed to Akasha Holistic Wellbeing Centre at Hotel Café Royal to try Reiki for the first time. It’s a therapy I know little about and was perhaps a touch skeptical. What is Reiki? In lay terms, Reiki is a healing technique based on the idea that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch. It’s in part designed to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being. There is an element of healing, of being open to the energy of the earth and the universe. I met Bernice Robinson a year or so ago and felt an immediate connection with her. She is a trained therapist who practices elements of beauty and massage, but she prefers more holistic treatments and has been recognized for her skills with professional nominations and awards. Specialising in Reiki and crystal healing, Bernice harnesses her natural healing ability and intuitive expertise …

Happiness Conscious Water - The Spa Man

Conscious Water really is a thing

Conscious Water is a 100% natural flower essence water enhancer, that when added to water, makes a refreshing drink that adds a bit of aspiration to your day. So says the introduction on the website. We all know we need water and we all know that we should be drinking lots more of it. This could well be the answer we are looking for. In the spa post-treatment you will find jugs of water, often flavoured with slices of cucumber, lemon or lime. Conscious Water has come along to shake up the way we consume water, both in the spa and at home. It is based on the idea of flower essences, which some people believe are potent agents of change. About flower essences Flower essences are said to provide us with a natural way to adjust our body’s flow of energy. Flower essences are made by floating flowers in water and allowing the light of the sun to help the water absorb their energy. Modern flower remedies were first developed in the early 1930’s by Dr.Edward …

Niche Tea Sleep - The Spa Man

Niche Tea radiates wellness from within

The Niche Co has launched a range of premium wellness teas – simply called Niche Tea. The distinctive packaging is modern and smart although the gold embossed branding is sometimes lost a bit. However its what’s inside that counts. I really love these teas – and despite the cost. I believe its worth paying for quality tea. Niche has researched global herbal techniques and explored over 130 tea estates to create the sophisticated collection with specially designed formulas of medicinal natural herbs. With a choice of six, including teas created specifically to enhance the Mind, Body, Skin, Hair, Cleansing and Sleep, the tea tubes are packed with a healing and soothing blend of herbs that create a sense of wellness from within. Niche Tea radiates wellness from within Niche Tea products are ethically sourced and the production promises that there are no hidden ingredients or flavourings in the tea, and only 100% natural herbs. This for me is essential, as so many tea blends are really bad imitation flavours that are saccharine to taste and really rather horrible. Niche Tea is full of …

Men should practice mindfulness

5 Reasons Men Should Practice Mindfulness

Men should practice mindfulness. It’s something that I have written about before and I have now invited Paul Joseph from Health and Fitness Travel to comment on the growing trend of mindfulness and round-up 5 Reasons Men Should Practice Mindfulness. Paul says…. Women are attracted by practicing mindfulness more but things are changing and more men are starting to see the benefits of integrating mindfulness in their daily life. Paul Joseph, co-founder of Health and Fitness Travel, the leading specialists in tailor-made wellness holidays worldwide looks at 5 reasons why men should give mindfulness a good attempt and embrace the challenge. The art of mindfulness focuses the thinkers’ attention on their inner thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment. Men should practice mindfulness to re-focus their minds, to achieve inner balance and stability, with a mindfulness retreat being a relaxing opportunity for those looking to re-connect with their mind and body. Attempting to balance the pressures of home and work life can result in a stressed emotional state, so practicing mindfulness will help men to remain calm, support …

Soak Steam Dream Roca Gallery

Soak, Steam, Dream: Reinventing Bathing Culture

Soak, Steam, Dream: Reinventing Bathing Culture 16 September 2016 – 28 January 2017 Admission free Soak, Steam, Dream: Reinventing Bathing Culture is a new exhibition that explores a new communal bathing culture through the work of contemporary architects and designers. The exhibition is part of the 2016 London Design Festival and features international bathhouse projects by Peter Zumthor, Skene Catling de la Peña, H3T architekti and Kengo Kuma. These all re-imagine the bathhouse as a social space, factoring in smart water use for the 21st century. This is particularly exciting for The Spa Man, as it’s rare that spa and bathing culture receives this kind of public platform. This is especially interesting given that we are witnessing a return to traditional forms of bathing and a renewed interest in communal bathing traditions. Curator Jane Withers says, ‘There has been an extraordinarily rich architecture and culture associated with communal bathing since ancient times. With the arrival of the private bathroom and a more clinical approach to sanitation and wellbeing, we have lost this leisurely sense of the …
