Review: Angsana Balaclava Mauritius

Angsana Balaclava Mauritius - the Spa Man

Angsana Balaclava Mauritius occupies a stunning spot on the scenic northwest coast of Mauritius on the tranquil shores of Turtle Bay. The all-suite resort is a romantic getaway emulating a traditional Mauritian style with thatched roofs and natural stone. Rooms have sea or mountain views and showcase the sunset every evening.  Owing a great deal of design inspiration to its Asian heritage, Angsana Balaclava is a bright and breezy boutique resort that’s a perfect sunshine escape.

With a small beach and a selection of sun beds and a boat house for water sports, you could easily spend your whole holiday here, but just beyond the gates are some of the major sights including the Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens, Grand Baie, La Bourdonnais and the capital Port Louis.

The central feature of the Angsana Balaclava Mauritius resort is the main pool. The rooms benefit from large sitting areas, terraces, a huge comfy bed, spacious bathroom and large bath. There are a couple of restaurants (one for lunch by the pool and Oryza for breakfast and evening meals). It’s a relaxing property with attentive staff who are happy and helpful. What more could you want?

Combining the very best of Asian expertise with a warm and friendly Mauritian welcome The Angsana Spa features nine treatment rooms (three double rooms and six single rooms), a fully equipped gym, a yoga pavilion, a restorative vitality pool, sauna and a hammam.  Decorated in typical Angsana style, there’s a definite Thai theme flowing through reception and the treatment rooms. From the wai, Thai greeting to post treatment ginger tea, it’s a very Asian affair. The spa itself has lots of treatment rooms, many are doubles and boast private changing, toilet and steam/shower.

The spa therapists have been trained by experts from the Banyan Tree Spa Academy who offer Asian and Ayurvedic spa treatments using local ingredients from botanical coconut, ylang ylang and sugar cane to marine elements such as seaweed and mud.

The centrepiece of the spa is the circular outdoor hydrotherapy pool. Blue mosaic tiles, sky views and a selection of water jets and pressure jets make this a great pre-treatment space to relax the muscles and settle into the chilled vibe of the spa. It has a couple of outdoor loungers plus hammam and sauna which provide guests with plenty of options to relax at anytime of the day. Using them pre and post treatment enhances the benefits of the relaxing pampering treatment menu which is heavily focused on Asian influenced treatment therapies.

The Fusion Massage is a blend of Thai and Shiatsu massage with some stretching added into the mix. Blending medium to firm pressure it features a blend of lemongrass and eucalyptus oil which provide a heady blend for total body relaxation. I particularly enjoyed the Thai elements with arm and lower back stretching plus a couple of crunches of the spine. You choose a blend of potpourri to sit under the treatment bed, pine, orange or eucalyptus. And post treatment there’s a rich, ginger tea to enjoy and a little sweet flapjack. Heaven!
