In the heart of rural West Sussex, the Park House Hotel & Spa is a bit of an unsung hero. The family owned property is a small country house hotel with a warm heart. Just a stones’ throw from the South Downs, it’s an idyllic setting for a weekend spa escape.
With 21 luxury en-suite bedrooms in the main hotel building and three adjacent cottages (where The Spa Man stayed) the décor is designed to reflect an English country home. I was worried it would be on the wrong side of chintzy – but was pleasantly surprised. Yes, there are floral prints, but contrasted with modern fittings and a neutral palette, it really works. If you aren’t heading to the spa you could laze by the outdoor pool or try tennis, croquet, lawn bowls, or a quick round of golf on the six-hole par 3 golf course. And do make plans to dine in the restaurant. The tasting menu was top class.
THE SPA AT PARK HOUSE HOTEL & SPA:
The award-winning spa wasn’t on my radar prior to visiting, but now I highly recommend it to friends looking for a weekend escape from London. It has to be one of the best spas in Sussex. Winner of Conde Nast Johansens’ Luxury Spa Awards in the ‘Best for Couples in the UK, Europe & The Mediterranean’ category, it’s a big space with a decent sized indoor pool (15 metres), marble shower, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam rooms plus a compact gym. There’s a modern, light and airy reception showing off the retail offering from VOYA and Kerstin Florian and the centre piece (in warmer months) is the outdoor pool, just perfect for relaxing post treatment.
The changing rooms are compact, you wouldn’t want any more than two people in the space at one time, and lockers were a bit too small.
THE KERSTIN FLORIAN TREATMENT:
The Kerstin Florian Body Detox Firming Treatment at Park House Hotel & Spa is designed to refine and firm body contours. What attracted me to this spa treatment was the brand – I’m a big fan and the use of the Spirulina Body Masque.
It begins with a dry body brush from top to toe. The Spirulina Masque is applied to the whole body and you are then lightly wrapped in film to increase the body temperature. Whilst this is working its detox magic, you get a relaxing head massage – dreamy.
Then it’s into the shower to wash away the masque and back on to the bed for a slimming treatment. Massaging each area of the body in turn with slimming serum it uses ice cold compresses to stimulate circulation, then further massage and additional application of slimming serum. I loved the contrast of cold compresses and firm massage. Definitely one of the best detox spa treatments I’ve had.
ROOM TO IMPROVE:
Lose the TV in the changing room. It’s noisy and distracting.
Open the outdoor pool earlier in the season – some people like a bracing swim
