Review: The Spa at The Grand, Brighton

THE SPA

The Spa at The Grand Hotel on Brighton’s seafront launched mid-2013 and offers a range of new treatment therapies that celebrate its location and history in equal measures. Instead of trying to transpose a Balinese suite or Asian inspired spa, The Grand has captured the essence of its seaside location. Muted tones of beige and soft sea green set the tone in this modern well-appointed day spa. The structural constraints of the Victorian building precluded the installation of water and hydro facilities. However, there’s a thermal suite which has a detox crystal steam room, aromatherapy sauna and experience showers. You can grab a bite to eat at the spa café and the relaxation room is sumptuous and wouldn’t be out of place in a top London hotel – I loved the double bed in the middle where you can truly lounge about and chill.

There is package to suit everyone with really great deals and the prices are very competitive – particularly for single treatments. For guys – there are two pages of treatment designed just for men. Mostly massage, it also includes waxing and an anti-ageing facial.

It’s smart, new and not intimidating and you will find the staff both friendly and efficient. It’s a great day spa and a very welcome addition to the spa scene on the South Coast – especially in Brighton where spa lovers have until now, been missing out a bit.

THE HOTEL

The Grand has had a major overhaul and now must be one of the crowning glories in the Devere Hotel Group. Modern, contemporary furnishings in the rooms make for a very pleasant stay. The hotel has introduced a new concept – Chambre Unique rooms. OK they cost a little more, but well worth it – ESPA toiletries, SKY Movies, Espresso Coffee Machine and free Wifi. And on that note – choose one with a sea view – that is the major draw card, and on a sunny day, there is no better outlook. I was very impressed with the make-over as my past impression of The Grand was of a tired old dame that needed a lick of paint. How wrong I was.

THE TREATMENT

I chose a signature treatment from the main menu, one that is so true to its location. Brighton Rock is a one and a half hour body treatment. You choose your oil at the beginning and I was in need of perking up and chose the ESPA Detoxifying Bath and Body Oil. This was used for inhalation (in a bowl under the massage table) and also in the following body massage. But before all of that started I was scrubbed head to toe using Invigorating Salt and Oil Scrub – it left me feeling tingly and alive again – it was brilliant. After this I showered and was ready for the full body massage using hot stones. The pressure was good, it attended to every nook and cranny and spent enough time on the back and neck where I had mentioned (in the consultation) needed a little extra attention. What really makes this unique is that it links the treatment to your location. I do like to be beside the seaside and Brighton Rock really rocks! If you are ever on the South Coast of England – get yourself along to The Spa at The Grand.
