Sugar cane and bamboo treatments in Mauritius

The award-winning Spa at Angsana Balaclava Mauritius has launched a new treatment, inspired by the heart and soul of its tropical home, using natural, locally-sourced ingredients from Mauritius. I’m visiting Mauritius in October, staying at this fabulous resort and look forward to experiencing the delights of this new therapy.

Drawing inspiration from the abundance of exotic ingredients in Mauritius, the resort’s new Nature Touch treatment offers an alternative to the traditional spa experience. Specially-created to make the most of the natural benefits found within local ingredients including sugar cane and bamboo, this two-hour treatment features a 30-minute body polish, 60 minute massage and 30-minute rest and relaxation time in one of the Spa’s luxury private treatment rooms.

The body polish blends number of ingredients indigenous to Mauritius; sugar cane, cucumber and mint, to create an invigorating scrub. Glycolic acid, naturally present in sugar cane, is renowned for its exfoliating qualities; removing dead skin cells, dirt and oil that can build up and lead to skin problems. The addition of cucumber, which contains the important health busting mineral silica to strengthen hair and nails, also provides a cooling element to the scrub, as well as keeping the skin hydrated and helping to eliminate toxins.

Revitalised by the body polish, guests are then treated to a soothing bamboo massage; the therapist uses locally-sourced, hollowed canes to apply strong therapeutic strokes. This method of massage is designed to ease stiff muscles, stimulate blood circulation and promote a sense of deep relaxation. Warm nutrient-rich sesame oil is applied to the body throughout the massage to leave skin lightly scented and supple. Sesame oil, a natural anti-bacterial, has been used for its healing qualities for thousands of years and is believed to ease a variety of medical ailments and skin conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure; it is also understood to relieve inflammation after a long-haul flight.
