Les Prés d'Eugénie

Review: Les Prés d’Eugènie, France

Les Prés d’Eugénie is a classy country house hotel in the south west corner of France that mixes old world charm, a warm and friendly welcome with world class cuisine and a thermal spa that is authentic and most memorable. Part of the Relais & Chateau group, the hotel is unequivocally French, decorated with furniture and art from the owner’s personal collection that dates from the 18th to 20th centuries. The rooms are warm and cosy and breakfast is served in the privacy of your own room each morning. The large drawing rooms in the oldest part of the building are perfect for a pre-dinner aperitif. Large sofas and intimate spaces are punctuated by period pieces and rich colours. And the main event is the three Michelin star restaurant. Holding this accolade for over 40 years, the food is outstanding, innovative and one of life’s great experiences. Aside from this haute cuisine, spa guests can enjoy a programme that includes the Eugenie Slimming Cuisine, prepared by world renowned Michel Guerard. He developed the programme in …

The best places to spa outside on a bank holiday weekend

It’s a bank holiday and the weather looks set to be sunny and rather glorious. The Spa Man has picked the best places to spa outside. What better way to enjoy an extended bank holiday weekend than to enjoy relaxing spa treatments and the great outdoors. The UK has some brilliant spas and what’s more – lots of them have an outdoor pool or patio. Book it now. The Scarlet The Scarlet in Cornwall is renowned for its fabulous green credentials. Modern design touches and sustainability are evident throughout the hotel and spa. But what captured my attention is the clifftop outdoor swimming pool filtered by reeds and the clifftop hot tubs that look out across the ocean. I have not been to The Scarlet as yet, but friends who have give it glowing reviews. www.scarlethotel.co.uk Rudding Park Rudding Park has one of the most impressive landscaped spa gardens in the UK. Complete with outdoor hot tub and sauna cabin, the infinity pool looks out across the woods – and there’s places to sit and …

Shinta Mani Angkor, Siem Reap, Cambodia - The Spa Man

Review: Shinta Mani Angkor, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Shinta Mani Angkor in the bustling tourist town of Siem Reap in Cambodia is the perfect spot for temple touring when visiting Angkor Wat. The heritage site at Angkor Wat covers an area roughly the size of Birmingham and the temples are jaw-dropping. Shinta Mani Angkor is just 15 minutes away from the temples.  The hotel is a modern, slightly quirky boutique offering with a great little spa on the side. It’s situated in a smart part of town, on one of the best kept streets in the French Quarter and is an Instagrammers dream. Bill Bensley Design at Shinta Mani Angkor Designed by acclaimed architect Bill Bensley, there are 39 contemporary rooms in the hotel which draw on elements of Khmer inspired design. The eye catching monochrome colour scheme is punctuated with splashes of colour, which makes for a refreshing change from hotels that follow the teak-heavy style of many South East Asian hotels. We were greeted with a glass of fizz on arrival which was a nice touch. Check-in was seamless and we were …

Brighton Harbour Hotel - The Spa Man

Review: Brighton Harbour Hotel, Brighton, UK

The Brighton Harbour Hotel brings some much-needed coastal chic to the hotel scene in Brighton. The rooms are light, bright and breezy with white walls and modern fabrics giving a splash of colour to each room, with a nod to the coastal vibe of this buzzing seaside resort. Artwork adorns the walls and many rooms are sea facing with freestanding baths. It’s all very impressive, but be warned, Brighton is a busy town and Friday and Saturday night on the seafront can get a bit raucous. Bring earplugs and you will sleep soundly. Free gin and sherry in the rooms is a nice touch – what’s not to like? Oh and rooms also have tea and coffee making facilities which includes a Nespresso machine. Didn’t try dinner during the stay, but breakfast was an easy going affair with healthy buffet and on-trend breakfast choices including lots of avocado (tick). Vibrant fabrics and modern furniture with sea views. It’s brilliant fun. The Sunday Times Travel section listed it as the No.1 Seaside hotel and I have …

Toskana Therme Bad Salza - the Spa Man

Review: Toskana Therme Bad Sulza, Germany

Toskana Therme Bad Sulza is part of Toskana World, a unique collection of wellness resorts based in the former East Germany. Since its inception in the early 1990’s, wellness has been at the core of its offering. Under the direction of Marion Schneider and her husband, the operation began at Bad Sulza offering rehabilitation treatments to workers and patients under a public health scheme. This continues today, but is just one of the wellness offerings. Bad Sulza has been famous for years for inhalation of the salt vapours and bathing in the thermal waters. This spurned the development of a hotel on site and in 1999, Thermae Toskana opened to great fanfare. With multiple pools which allow guests to bathe in the mineral rich water, it’s a popular attraction. A wellness centre opened within the building offering a wide range of traditional spa and massage treatments. The futuristic design is memorable and a great experience for guests. Add in  some incredible spa and water therapy treatments, it makes for a wholesome wellness retreat. Liquid Sound …

Cliveden House Spa - The Spa Man

Review: The Cliveden Spa at Cliveden House, UK

The Cliveden Spa at Cliveden House offers a quintessential spa experience in the English country side. Situated in the grounds of the renowned Cliveden House estate, the spa has created a unique proposition with its newly renovated spa. Partnering with truly British brands that aren’t the usual names you would find in a spa setting, it’s reaching out to a new audience, whilst catering perfectly to its current clientele. Cliveden House really is one of the great names when it comes to English country estates. And with this comes much expectation. A five-star luxury hotel; the building is owned by the National Trust and operated under a long lease arrangement by the owners of Chewton Glen, Iconic Luxury Hotels. Sumptuous interiors, dark wood panelling throughout and the use of rich textures and warm colours including red and purples creates a cosy, welcoming environment. The staff are exceptional, greeting you by name and the food is impressive – especially the tasting menu at the André Garrett Restaurant. For more relaxed dining, head to the Astor Grill. …

Ye Olde Bell Spa - The Spa Man

Review: The Spa at Ye Olde Bell, Retford, UK

The Spa at Ye Olde Bell combines warm and friendly service in a brand-new spa that really knows how to treat its guests. With a great range of innovative thermal facilities and welcoming, knowledgeable staff, it exceeded my expectations (and some). Located on the borders of Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and the market town of Retford, the spa is situated adjacent to the historic Ye Olde Bell which is an independently owned 59 room country hotel, dating back to the 17th Century. The Hotel at Ye Olde Bell The hotel is basically an old-style coaching inn that really plays to its historical past. Expect dark oak paneling, plush fabrics, red walls, period features and art from the 17th and 18th centuries. You may even find a four-poster bed in your room. The hotel is of a particular style and the AA Four-Star Rosette hotel has 59 rooms which have all been recently refurbished. Book a room with a roll top bath for the full spa experience. Expect hearty fare in the restaurants and look out …

Seaham Hall in the snow - The Spa Man

10 of the best British winter spa breaks

A cosy fireside, a snug rug and a hot sauna the key elements for a great winter spa break. These are three sure-fire ways to warm the cockles of your heart (and your cold fingers and toes) this autumn and winter. Heading off to a countryside spa will give you the chance to get away from it all, plus the opportunity to take a bracing walk through the countryside or along the coast. No winter spa break is complete without kicking a few leaves around (if there’s any left) or meandering across frosty fields, ensuring you are back in time to indulge in a big Sunday lunch. Then to complete the experience (it is a winter spa break after all) make some time to chill out in the spa during the afternoon. The Spa Man has rounded-up his 10 of the best winter spa breaks. 1. Rudding Park Rooftop Spa - the Spa Man

Review: Rudding Park Spa, Yorkshire, UK

The Spa at Rudding Park near Harrogate has raised the bar for the spa industry in the UK by creating an innovative spa with some real ‘wow’ moments (yes its totally instagrammable). It complements the smart, modern hotel and with the addition of the modern bistro Horto featuring seasonally inspired dishes by Chef Murray Wilson it makes Rudding Park the place to stay and spa in Yorkshire. The hotel at Rudding Park A privately-owned luxury hotel, Rudding Park has 90 bedrooms, the spa, two restaurants and a kitchen garden, private cinema, two golf courses and conference and events space. Set in 300 acres of landscaped gardens and woodland, it makes Rudding Park one of the most beautiful places to stay in Harrogate. I loved the use of colour throughout the hotel with perfectly placed pieces of art that attract the eye and give it a modern luxury feel. Rooms are spacious, contemporary and the Follifoot wing opposite the spa is where you want to be. Rudding Park Spa The spa is huge. It’s impressive Rooftop …

Eagles Villas Outdoor Pool

Review: Eagles Villas, Halkidiki, Greece

Eagles Palace and the new Eagles Villas form part of a family run resort in a stunning location just a few kilometres from Ouranoupolis, Halkidiki. In the shadow of Mount Athos, it’s the most incredible setting for one of Greece’s premier five-star resorts. Eagles Palace Hotel is where most of the action happens and sits right on the beach. Note, that the new Eagles Villas are slightly separated from the main hotel with an even more exclusive feel, situated up the hill with jaw-dropping views of the sea (more of that later). From water sports on the beach to the large pool and a host of fitness, cultural and relaxing activities, there’s plenty to do for everyone. The resort is family friendly (yes there are quite a few kids) but the kid’s club keeps them occupied most of the time. If you want to brush up on your Greek alphabet or Greek cooking skills, there’s a class. Take pilates or personal training too – it’s all covered in the daily activity schedule. The list is …

Finca Cortesin - The Spa Man

Review: Finca Cortesin, Spain

THE HOTEL Opened in 2008, Finca Cortesin is an elegant, refined country house hotel that’s both relaxed and welcoming, offering five-star service in a subtle, personal style. A world away from the typical Costa del Sol hotel, it offers a modern mix of hacienda style retreat with a definite nod to its Andalusian roots. Boasting beautiful landscapes gardens, magnificent views to the mountains and sea and a causal air of exclusivity, it’s a perfect escape for a few days – or even longer. The hotel has 60 suites which are tastefully decorated with calming neutral palettes. The junior suites experiment a little more with splashes of colour and patterned wallpaper. Each with its own terrace, complete with table chairs and sun loungers. You could easily stay in the confines of your room, but with lots of activities (including golf) plus five pools and a beach club you will never be bored. The beach club had a great causal beach side dining restaurant. Pool and sun lounges it’s the best of both worlds and the shuttle …

Casa Velha do Palheiro, Madeira

Review: Casa Velha do Palheiro, Madeira

THE HOTEL Set high on on the hills above the capital, Funchal, Casa Velha do Palheiro is a former summer residence of a local dignitary built in the early 1800’s. Set amongst the lush green trees and alongside the famous gardens of the same name, it’s a beautiful escape from the hustle and bustle of Madeira’s main city. The sound of birds and the trees is pretty much all that disturbs the silence. It’s an elegant hotel, country-house in style with antique and period furnishings and just a touch floral in its accent colours. It all works and makes for a peaceful retreat. Taking tea and breakfast on the terrace is a joy and the hotel’s award-winning restaurant is highly recommended, serving quality gourmet food with style and elegance. Gentle walks through the gardens or lazing by the pool, days are relaxed and restful on the Palheiro Estate. The food is impressive, the staff are helpful but not overbearing and it makes for a totally relaxing stay. THE SPA at CASA VELHA DO PALHEIRO Spa lovers …
