Banya No.1 London - The Spa Man

Review: Traditional Russian Banya at Banya No.1 London

Tucked away on a quiet little back street in Shoreditch is the traditional Russian Spa, Banya No. 1. Offering a truly authentic take on the Banya experience, it’s all about the sauna and you are assured of getting all hot and sweaty. Most guests come to try the Parenie treatment which is set in the specially designed sauna. You literally lay down on the sauna bench and get whipped with leaves until your blood boils. It’s much more pleasurable than it sounds and it is a gentle therapy (to start) with light tapping of the leaves (mostly oak) accords the body. The banchik uses the leaves the gather hot air from the sauna and wave this across the body. Focussing on the back, legs and then feet, it’s somewhat soothing and comforting to begin with, then your body temperature starts to rise. Resting your head on the beech with a pillow of eucalypt and birch branches, these have been dipped on cool water and give a little relief. It’s when the focus shifts to the …

Hot new spa openings in London 2017

There are some really hot new spa openings in London 2017 and I for one am very excited. The London spa market operates in a bit of a bubble, and it continues to boom. Although, having said that, across the UK there are some very big  projects set to launch this year too. From day spas and urban retreats to the the uber-luxury of five-star properties it appears that our desire for new spa experiences in the capital has not been satisfied. 2017 marks a year of new developments, investment and openings. The City of London is a central focus with the Four Seasons at Ten Trinity Square and The Ned bringing spa luxury to the city. Whilst near Hyde Park, The Lanesborough is opening its Club & Spa. Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square (March 2017) From mid-March 2017, Four Seasons is set to open in the City of London. The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square will boast 1,680 square metres and eight spacious treatment rooms, including a spacious Spa Suite for couples and …

Arabian Beard Ritual - The Spa Man

Arabian Beard Ritual reviewed at The Spa at Dolphin Square

Capitalising on the continuing popularity of the beard trend (which I might note at this point – we have not yet reached peak beard), The Spa at Dolphin Square has added a rather impressive new treatment for men to its spa menu. The Arabian Beard Ritual is all about the beard. It’s not offered in a barbers chair and you won’t get a trim and style, but unlike anything I’ve experienced in a spa to date, your beard is cleansed, massaged and combed to perfection. To start, it begins with a light cleanse and hot towel refresh of the beard and so begins the ritual. Then, in true Moroccan style, the therapist applies thick, unctuous amounts of traditional black soap – Savon Noir. Arabian Beard Ritual Reviewed A potent blend of eucalyptus, it’s a heady cleanser that is used to lather up the follicles and hairs on the face in what can only be described as a good and thoroughly scrub. The muscles on the face are gently massaged which relieves tension in the jaw and was totally …

South Kensington Club Bathhouse Review - the Spa Man

Review: South Kensington Club, London

THE CLUB: Situated at the rear of the new South Kensington Club, the new Clubhouse is part spa, part bathing house and features a host of fitness suites, studios and a gym. The bathhouse which features [comfort zone] treatments in the therapy rooms and a brand new Banya suite offers some pretty serious wellness treatments for mind body and soul. A private entrance on a small mews leads to a compact reception. From here you are guided to the changing rooms which are large, elegant and have plenty of locker space and great amenities for members. A few treatment rooms offer your typical array of spa therapies, but it is the banya rooms that’s the most unique. Wooden walls, fireplace, large sauna and hammam set the tone for some serious heat treatments. Based on the traditional rituals of the banya from Russia, expect to be invigorated and alive at the end of a session. There is also a private hammam room for body scrubs and a private banya sauna. Most of the banya treatments take …

Dominate your day at Four Seasons Canary Wharf

THE HOTEL: A definite cut above the average corporate hotel, Four Seasons Canary Wharf is a welcome retreat from the grey facades and steely austere front of London’s new city hub. On a grey, wet day, the warm reception from the staff was just what the doctor ordered. The big draw at this hotel is its prime river front location. Bag a room with a river view and you could sit and gaze at the ever changing London skyline all day. When you tire of that make use of the guest passes for Virgin Active – just next door. It modern health club with a huge pool that looks out across the river is spot on. The rooms are spacious, the beds comfy (and big) and the bathroom has a massive bath. Definitely make some time for a soak. DOMINATE YOUR DAY: Visiting the hotel to experience the new Dominate your Day Energy Programme, I didn’t get to have the renowned breakfast, feasting instead on porridge made with almond milk, topped with blueberries and chia …

Mondrian London opens with new spa

A new hotel opening in London always creates a buzz and if there’s a spa involved (which there usually is) then that’s where my ears prick up. Mondrian London opens today and brings life to Sea Containers House on London’s South Bank. It’s Tom Dixon’s first crack at a hotel and first reports are glowing. The idea behind it was to create a transatlantic hotel with nautical influences that combines the best of Britain and America. You will find a restaurant, bar and lounge overlooking the river, a basement spa, a crafted midnight-blue screening room with brass detailing and 360 bedrooms each with a calm, cabin-like quality. The Tom Dixon designed agua Bathhouse & Spa at Mondrian London has been crafted as a social spa which adds some life to the placid London spa scene and will be working with exciting brands such as de mamiel, GLAMGLOW, Estelle and Thild, Soveral, CIATÉ, Dr Jackson’s Natural Products, Natura Bisse, Billion Dollar Brows, Lycon Waxing, Lola’s Apothecary and I Love My Muff. It’s definitely taking a different …

Review: Su-Man at AWAY Spa, W London

THE SPA: Light and bright, you could be forgiven for thinking you have entered the pearly gates of heaven. It’s a compact day spa in the W Hotel, London.  It plays host to celebrity and expert therapists like Su-Man and spray tan expert, James Harknett. AWAY Spa does offer sauna and steam room, but that’s about the extent of the “spa” facilities. You come here for the glamour and the expertise and it delivers that in massive doses. THE TREATMENT: Su-Man Skin Reborn Sculpting Facial at the AWAY Spa, W Hotel London A favourite of stars like Juliette Binoche, Frieda Pinto and Anne Hathaway, Su-Man’s signature facial is legendary.
