OHMME supports CALM for male suicide

Meditation and yoga workshops to help prevent male suicide

OHMME has partnered with CALM to run a series of workshops for men which launch in February 2018. CALM is the Campaign Against Living Miserably, and exists to prevent male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. In 2015, 75% of all UK suicides were male. On average that equates to 12 men per day taking their own lives. CALM runs a range of services to support any man who is having a rough time and campaigns that challenge society’s ideals of masculinity. It does some incredible work helping guys to open up, to talk and to confront their fears and problems. Vital work in tackling the huge issue of male suicide. The #StillnessInMotion are workshops have been specifically created for men by Jonty (from the charity), to help dispel societal stereotypes of masculinity, that men should be tough, ‘just deal with it’, and ‘man up’. The first International Day of Yoga: 21st June

Today, 21 June, is the first International Day of Yoga and it’s really gaining some momentum. It’s impressive that The United Nations General Assembly declared 21 June the International Day of Yoga in December 2014, when a record 175 member states endorsed the resolution. The resolution notes “the importance of individuals and populations making healthier choices and following lifestyle patterns that foster good health.” Around the world people are planning yoga events throught the day which also coincides with the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere. India’s Prime Minister Narenda Modi led thousands of people in a mass yga session in the capital, Delhi who did stretches, bends and breathing exercises with around 35,000 school children, bureaucrats and soldiers.Millions of people across India and around the world are participating too. At the UN, simple yoga poses will be demonstrated at the Visitors Plaza Entrance, while in Times Square, New York – which has had a yoga event timed with the solstice for the past 13 years. The Growth of Mindfulness

Mindfulness appears to be everywhere and, in some instances promises to solve pretty much every problem there is. It’s growth continues and everywhere you look a spa, health expert or mind guru is offering tips, techniques, sessions, course and online apps to help you on your way. I have written about it before and you can read “What is mindfulness medition” here The Huffington Post has it’s own dedicated channel to mindfulness and it’s well worth taking a look for the latest reseach, tips, advice and comment. I’m a big fan and it’s helped me resolve stress and anxiety issues. The whole month of May is devoted to the project – Mindful in May. Which combines regular practice, joining people across the globe to help raise money to bring clean water to commnities who need it most. A cool App for meditation

The Mindfulness App from itunes has been a real help at times when I need guidance in the process of slowing my thoughts and for meditating. I have written about the concept of Mindfulness Meditation here but what I find is that it can be hard to do it on your own. Meditation, guided by voice can really help and gives some structure to your mindfulness. There are some drawbacks with this. I wasn’t too keen on the woman’s voice or accent – although I did get used to it. I would have also preferred an option for a 10 minute meditation too. What’s good: You can set reminders at different times and days which sends you a message when it’s time to meditate You can choose if you want to sit for a shorter or longer period You can be guided by a voice or just sit in silence with bells ringing at different times You can do it anywhere at home or on public transport or even at work.
