Review: Six Senses Douro Valley, Portugal

Six Senses Douro Valley is the new-ish 57-room spa resort in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Douro Valley. It’s a world-class spa combining wine and wellness. Situated in picturesque vineyards overlooking the majestic River Douro, the property dates back to the late 19th century and is located around an hour from Porto in northern Portugal. The resort is the first venture of its kind for Six Senses in Europe and marks a period of rapid expansion for the company. Most of the guest rooms have impressive river views and the wine library and restaurants fully embrace the viticulture of the region. As well as the organic garden the 19-acre property offers a large outdoor pool, walking tracks through the vineyards to the river, and its own forest. The spa at Six Senses Douro Valley is vast and was the European launch pad for the brand’s new Integrated Wellness Programme. Six Senses Douro Valley opens

The first resort property for the Six Senses group has opened its doors to great acclaim in Portugal. Located in the beautiful Portuguese UNESCO World Heritage area of the Douro Valley (near Porto), the property effortlessley blends 19th century architecture with contemporary interiors reflecting the inimitable Six Senses style. The Douro is a sun-kissed valley boasting amber hued vine-filled terraces and the River Douro which winds its lazy way to Porto and the Atlantic Coast passing though the oldest wine-producing region in the world. The resort covers 19 acres (8 hectares) and features 71 guest rooms and suites which range from Valley, Spa and River rooms to spacious suites and villas with one, two and three bedrooms. An expansive Six Senses Spa measures over 24,000 square feet (2,200 square metres) with 10 treatments rooms. Presenting the Six Senses specialty treatments and multi-day programs delivered by skilled therapists, the spa has a menu of locally-inspired therapies which include some which are wine based.
