Stoer Skincare for Men - The Spa Man

Stoer Skincare for Men is modern, no-fuss and really works

Stoer Skincare for Men is a bit of a revelation. A simple, effective, modern range of skincare for men that’s no-fuss, straight forward and really works. Born in the wilds of the North of Scotland, the range has been created by Marianne Morrison who has an interesting background, having worked in the oil industry and prior to that as a skin therapist. Combining her knowledge of skin and working closely with lots of blokes, she got to know the concerns and attitudes of men to skincare. So all-in-all she gained some very valuable insights. Many years later and after much research and development she launched Stoer to market, firstly in Harvey Nichols and soon to spread its wings to other retailers. Its key premise is to protect and defend skin against the elements. Stoer Skincare for Men has been developed with signature Clima5 Technology – a unique blend of five skin-saving plant actives from around the world, from four very challenging climates. Clima5 has been encapsulated in cutting-edge ‘cosmetic drone’ technology which is said to …

Jurlique Store London - The Spa Man

Review: Jurlique, London

Jurlique has opened a smart new concept store in the heart of London, right on Oxford Street. Walking through the door you are instantly transported to a place of calm and serenity. The heady scents of the natural products helps to lower the anxiety levels win an instant. For even greater calmness you can book in for a facial or spa treatment using Australia’s favourite natural brand – Jurlique. It should be high on your list of must-visit destinations. Especially as you traverse the crowds of Oxford Street. Treatment Review I booked in for a Best of Both Worlds Treatment which combines a back, neck and shoulder massage with a relaxing and revitalising facial. The treatment begins with a foot soak then a much-needed relaxing back and shoulder massage using Japanese Mint Oil. I was given a choice of three but this one really hit the spot. You then experience a thoroughly pampering facial using the natural products from the Jurlique range. Deep cleansing and light exfoliation prepare the skin for a fabulous mask and some …

FOREO LUNA for MEN - The Spa Man

FOREO Luna for Men

Gadgets and grooming go together. The razor is one of the most lucrative and innovative sectors and now beards as de rigour, there are swathes of tools and electrical items to preen and trim full follicled faces. A few years ago cleansing face gadgets swamped the women’s skincare sector and it was a natural progression for them to eventually target men too. And why not – everyone loves a clean face right? A deep thorough cleanse is fairly high on most men’s wish list, removing grim, dirt and blackheads. Gadgets do help and make the whole process quicker and easier. I’ve tried the quick action brushes and they work like a dream. Especially in the shower. For an even more high tech option, FOREO has launched FOREO LUNA for Men. It’s a cleansing device designed for a man’s skin and typically it comes in black. The press release hails it as the Ultimate Pre-Shaving Skincare Device for a Closer More Comfortable Shave after Just 1-Minute! Well I have to say I’ve used it as a …

Nudge Face Masks - The Spa Man

nügg Face Masks

nügg Face Masks are rather dinky little travel-friendly face masks that are not only a great price (£3.29) they are an ideal pick-me-up for the face when its been a bit neglected. I decided to put them to the test on a break in Ibiza, knowing I would be out in the sun and swimming in the sea everyday. I knew my face would need an added boost of nourishing and hydrating ingredients and each mask in the range addresses a different concern – be it soothing, hydrating, cleansing, exfoliating, revitalizing and anti-ageing. nügg’s innovative facemasks are manufactured with what is said to be an innovative Natural Oil Dispersion Technology that uses physics instead of chemistry to blend oil and water which avoids the use of chemical emulsifiers that can impair the natural skin barrier function. Did they live up to the hype? So I tried out nügg Hydrating Face Mask and it does what it says on the tin. It felt cool on the skin, but not a menthol-style cool. It was probably just …

What a BRYT idea

A new addition to the skincare and grooming scene is great little British brand called BRYT Skincare. It’s a bright, fresh concept which has just launched in Waitrose. The basic premise is a simple 3-step process of Cleansing, Nourishing and Protecting to maintain an uncomplicated  regime. It embraces skincare as part of a healthy lifestyle, along with the basics of exercising, getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet and drinking lots of water. Aromatherapy meets Phytoscience is the USP,  utilising botanical ingredients which make it a sensory pleasure to use, but deliver some great results. The range consists of eight products for Her and four for Him. Each features the innovative Advanced Phytoscience System (APS), which includes pure aloe vera, healing allantoin and rich ‘super antioxidants’ extracted from organic Australian wild-harvested plums Kakadu, Burdekin and Illawarra – these superfruits contain up to five times more antioxidant power than blueberries. I am a sucker for a great smelling shower gel and BRYT didn’t disappoint. There’s four products in the men’s range and this would suit a …

3-Day Facelift Diet (it’s very fishy)

That’s what Dr Perricone is promising with this fish fest. Don’t be misled – you will eat a LOT of salmon following this diet, it’s jam-packed with Omega oils and backed up by the skin doctor’s philosophy on supplying vitamin and oil rich foods to the skin. Ocado, the online supermarket now makes the diet as easy as pie, you can buy everything you need online (and it’s quite a bit) all in one easy package. Did I say you eat a lot of fish? It’s morning, noon and night. Oh and yes, there’s the eggs. Actually in fairness when you look at the meal plan (below), it’s really healthy, amazingly nutritious and delivers everything you need. It promises a visible difference in your skin in just three days. Too good to be true?  That’s what it promises. Dr Perricone recommends the 3-Day Face Lift Diet as the perfect way to jumpstart his 28-Day Plan – this will allow you to see a drop in weight and visible results in your skin right away. and …

Hey big spender

I love a survey about the spending habits of men and male grooming. Debenhams has been out and about to survey men and it found that men in their 30’s spend more on male grooming products than men in their 20’s and 50’s combined. The quest to hold onto youthful looks a youthful looks and the influence of well-groomed celebrities such as Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt are thought to have led to the increase in spending habits. Apparently, the average 30 something man now admits to spending over £100 per month on expensive eye creams, luxurious moisturisers and trips to the spa – three times as much as their gym membership (based on average gym costs) Of the 1,000 UK males surveyed, those aged between 20 – 29 spent on average £35 per month on grooming products. The figure doubled for males in their 40’s who spent an impressive £70, while those in their 50’s seemed to have a more relaxed approach to male grooming at around £45 per month. A Debenhams spokespers commented, …

The Spa Man's guide to how to supplement your skin. The concept of supporting healthy skin function from the inside out

How to supplement your skin

So here is The Spa Man’s guide to how to supplement your skin. The concept of supporting healthy skin function from the inside out makes perfect sense to me. Skin is alive, it’s our largest organ and is contantly renewing itself. Why not ensure that it is healthy and properly nourished with the correct level of vitamins, essential fatty acids and trace minerals. I do firmly believe in supplementing the skin with a healthy diet and nutritional supplements. It is all very well applying lots of topical creams and serums to your skin, but if it isn’t healthy and working at its optimum level, these will only provide a hydrating benefit and possibly little else. I spoke to a nutritional expert about the concept of supplementing the skin. Lorraine Perretta, nutrititional consultant at the International Institute for Anti-Ageing explains, ‘Vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids actually nourish the skin from within and these nutrients are important for the production of skin cells. For example, the cell membrane of a skin cell is made from essential …

How to…nourish your skin with nuts

Nuts are an essential part of your diet and contain a whole variety of micro-nutrients that are important not only for the health of your body and organs – but provide essential nourishment for your skin. I have picked out some of the nut superstars and below interviewed Nicholas Perricone, MD for the inside story on why nuts are so good for the skin. Brazil nuts – just four nuts provide over 100 per cent of your RDA. Selenium protects the body from free radicals that can cause premature ageing Walnuts – contain Omega-3 fats that strengthen the membranes of your skin cells, locking in moisture and nutrients that keep it plump and glowing and keeping out toxins that can damage skin cells Almonds – rich in Vitamin E which acts as an antioxidant helping to protect skin cells from UV light and other environmental factors that generate cell-damaging free radicals Hazelnuts – a potent source of Vitamin E and packed with many important B-complex groups of vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), …
