The Spa Man

What I’ve learned about spas (from the man who visits over 30 a year)

I have been visiting spas for over a decade and am privileged to visit some of the world’s most incredible spa and wellness destinations. From medi-spas in Switzerland and holistic retreats in Thailand to the warm healing waters of the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, it’s been an incredible journey. In my time as a spa writer I have visited over 300 spas and had well over 1000 treatments including countless massages, body scrubs, facials, reflexology, reiki, holistic healing, and trauma therapy. I’ve been scrubbed, soaked, stretched and starved, pampered, poked, prodded, and even pricked with an IV drip. I’ve had my chakras balanced in Greece, meditated on a mountain in the Seychelles, let go of guilt in Italy and had an out of body experience in Mauritius. But in all seriousness, I have come to learn that it’s possible to reboot and reset your mind, body and soul in the spa. Done correctly it can be truly lifechanging. I know, I have had a number of experiences that have brought me back from the brink …

Iceland Beer Spa - The Spa Man

New beer spa opens at Bjórböðin in Iceland

Iceland has launched a new beer spa at Bjórböðin, located on the north coast of the island. The new beer spa (which is a Beerspa & Restaurant) offers spa treatments in Kambala wood hot tubs filled with beer, water, hops and yeast.  I’m told that each of the tubs comes with its own beer tap with ales provided by the associated Bruggsmiðjan microbrewery. There are a number in Prague and the Czech Republic and a few spas in the UK tried to jump on the trend by launching beer-lite spa treatments. These were ‘inspired’ by brewing and hops. you didn’t actually soak int eh beer though – but could enjoy a pint before or afterwards. The new beer spa on the block is called Bjórböðin, and is located on the northern tip of Iceland in the village of Árskógssandur. Guests can take a relaxing soak in giant tubs of beer, which is …

Men visit spas – it’s a fact, but very few spas cater properly to the needs of men. But this is changing. Resense, a global spa management company has just announced a new partnership with gentleman’s barber, Truefitt & Hill. The plan is  to create a luxurious spa grooming experience exclusively for men which is a big step forward, not only for spas but also the world of male grooming. The first spa earmarked for this new launch is the Hotel Adlon Kempinski in Berlin. It’s a success story for the British brand as Truefitt & Hill has a long history in the world of barbering dating back to 1805. Since then it’s been providing shaving products and services and remains the oldest barbershop in the world. It’s mentioned in novels by Dickens and Thackeray and previous clients such as Winston Churchill, Lord Byron, Fred Astaire, Laurence Olivier and Cary Grant. It’s an institution. Today, Truefitt & Hill has shops located in London, Chicago Las Vegas and Toronto. You may not have heard of Resense …
