Review: The Spa at The Grand, Brighton

THE SPA The Spa at The Grand Hotel on Brighton’s seafront launched mid-2013 and offers a range of new treatment therapies that celebrate its location and history in equal measures. Instead of trying to transpose a Balinese suite or Asian inspired spa, The Grand has captured the essence of its seaside location. Muted tones of beige and soft sea green set the tone in this modern well-appointed day spa. The structural constraints of the Victorian building precluded the installation of water and hydro facilities. However, there’s a thermal suite which has a detox crystal steam room, aromatherapy sauna and experience showers. You can grab a bite to eat at the spa café and the relaxation room is sumptuous and wouldn’t be out of place in a top London hotel – I loved the double bed in the middle where you can truly lounge about and chill. There is package to suit everyone with really great deals and the prices are very competitive – particularly for single treatments. For guys – there are two pages of …

How to…classify spas

Spas vary in shape, size, location and brand. The first experience of a spa is often at a hotel, but limit yourself to this style and you limit your experience and enjoyment. Here is a quick guide to the different types of spas you will find with a short explanation of each. Destination Spa Destination Spas are just that – the spa is the destination and main reason for visiting. It offers accommodation, spa cuisine and a whole programme of activities and events. Your stay will be all-inclusive and include spa treatments, fitness regimes, therapeutic treatments, educational classes and other wellness options. Minimum stays are often required. Destination spas are not just for holidays but to remedy problems and can be life changing.  Hotel Spa Hotel Spas are likely to be one of the first you will encounter. They should include a fitness suite or gym, a pool and sometimes other outdoor pursuits. The spa will feature a full-service treatment menu for beauty, grooming and therapeutic treatments.  The spa is an add-on to the hotel …

Postcard from Paris

Paris – the city of light (and love). Words and pictures rarely do it justice. It’s spas are renowned as some of the finest in the world and I’ve been visiting two of the very best on a short Spring break to the French capital. George V – part of the Four Seasons group exudes Parisian charm. Widely regarded as the finest, most luxurious hotel spa in Paris, its an escape; a retreat in the heart of the hustle and bustle – just off the Champs-Elysées. Fabulous body and face treatments, water facilities and a subtle elegance will both calm and relax you. And then to completely contrast this, my second night was spent at the recently modernised Le Royal Monceau, Raffles Paris. Exuding style, art and designed by Phillipe Starck, it’s a hotel like no other. And then there’s the spa. The first spa concept by Clarins – The Spa My Blend by Clarins is customised, bespoke and set in a light, airy and luxurious spa in the hotel’s basement – but you would …
