Christmas stocking fillers

I love a Christmas stocking – it’s often more fun and way more interesting that one big gift. Mix it up and vary the contents with things to use, little luxuries and something to make them laugh too. Aromatherapy Associates Little Bell (£10) This little bell shaped box features the Aromatherapy Associates Revive Bath and Shower Oil. Hang it on the tree or pop it into a stocking. It screams Christmas. The oil is based on grapefruit, rosemary and juniper.       Blackbird Ai Incence Pyres (£18) Unique incense pyres packaged by hand by Blackbird in Ballard, WA. Place the pyre in the lid of the tin, and lit – allow the flame to burn brightly for a couple of minutes, then blow out and leave to smoulder. The incense will smoulder for 15 minutes, after which the scent will begin to develop, and the aroma will fill the room for approximately 2-4 hours. SCENT NOTES: Moss, Geranium, Rose Stem and Mint.     This Works Cosmic Cracker (£9) A fabulous stocking …

Live from Professional Beauty North

One of the biggest beauty shows in the UK, Professional Beauty heads North to Manchester every year to host some of the best skincare and grooming brands under one roof. This year, after the success of my “Live from Olympia Beauty” post, I decided to head up North myself and check out the new launches and hot exciting products on offer. I’ve got my eyes open for all things spa and I’m on the look out for men’s grooming products. It’s busy, it’s buzzing and here’s what I found: Kissed by Mii A new sunless tanning range that launched this year has a salon and spa treatment – and look how the spray tan solution comes – in a wine box! It’s such a brilliant idea, stops the product from oxidising and really is one of the most innovative ideas I’ve seen today.           Obey Your Body Obey Your Body is something I’ve never seen before, a metallic looking skin mask that you apply, leave for 10 minutes and then remove …

Postcard from Manchester

Manchester is one of my favourite cities in the UK. It’s got heart and soul and I love the urban environment. The grand old warehouses, the canals, Chinatown and the shoppings pretty damn good too. For me, growing up, Manchester was all about New Order, The Smiths and the Happy Mondays. Today is about beauty and spa. I’m visiting for the Professional Beauty exhibition and staying at The Lowry Hotel to review the spa. It’s often grey when I drop in and likely to rain. But I love it. I could live here. Yes I could.

New brand discovery: Homo Naturals

THE STORY: Homo Naturals is a brand I discovered whilst on holiday near Barcelona in Spain this year. It’s based on a simple four step routine: cleanse, scrub, tone and hydrate – so all the basics, but nothing new in the regime. OK, the name may alienate some straight men from the outset. It’s not specifically designed for a gay audience. This is a Spanish brand so homo is indicative of men. It focuses on active ingredients, is formulated naturally and without synthetic chemicals. In particular it is free from: mineral oils, petrolatum, parane, silicones, vaseline, animal oils, trietanolamine, EDTA, PEG, PPG, BHT, BHA, parabens, phenoxyetanol, formaldehydes, synthetic perfumes. THE PRODUCT: I tried a sample of the Youth-Blend Anti-stress Moisturizer I was given whilst in Sitges. It’s a hydrating, anti-ageing moisturiser with shea butter, jojoba oil and avocado oil vitamin E and C and Organic Gingko Biloba extract. It’s based on aromatherapy and has a slightly woody scent but is not over powering. THE SCIENCE: Organic Gingko Biloba extract: great revitaliser and anti-ageing. Alantoin and …

Review: QMS Medicosmetics Skincare Spa

THE SPA: QMS Medicosmetics Flagship Skincare Spa is based in Cadogan Gardens, just off Kings Road, Chelsea, in the heart of London.  A medi-spa of distinction, I was extremely impressed with the layout, lighting design and staff. Pure white, set off with cleverly designed lighting touches of blue to accentuate the modern look. There is a huge reception and retail area at the front of this Victorian Building and lots of treatment rooms. As with most medi-spa concepts, this follows the day spa format and features no water or long stay leisure facilities. QMS Medicosmetics, if you didn’t know, is the brainchild of Dr. med. Erich Schulte, a renowned European cosmetic surgeon who has pioneered skin ageing and regeneration techniques, many of which are evident in his skincare line, used in the medi-spa. THE TREATMENT: I was invited to try the Deep Cleanse Oxygen Treatment. Not knowing much about the range or brand, I popped along to try it out. My therapist was really quite incredible. Knowledgeable, helpful and ever so skilled. She knew when …

Breakfast Smoothie for your skin

THE STORY: Temple Spa Breakfast Smoothie is designed for normal skin and is a smooth, creamy facial scrub that gently and effectively lifts dead skin, leaving it fresh and clean. It smells really fruity and delicious and if it were served in a glass, I would scoff it for brekkie. I’ve been known to apply it and leave it as a mask treatment (when I have time). THE SCIENCE: Apricot Oil – moisturising and nourishing Honey – softening and smoothing Jojoba Oil – moisturising and reduces moisture loss Oat Seed Extract – soothing and calming Pear and Apple – clarifying Papaya – softens and refines the skin Strawberry – skin brightening and astringent Orange Oil – refreshing and stimulating THE VERDICT: Works as good as it smells. I use it sparingly as I don’t want it to run out. THE DETAILS: 100ml – £22

Terraké Men Anti-fatigue Shower Gel

THE STORY: Terraké is a spa brand that is one to watch. Not that well-known at the moment, but you will find it in some great spas including Stoke Park. I’ve had a spa treatment by Terraké – brilliant. I’ve recently have been trialling the Anti-fatigue Shower Gel for Men. It’s got quite a thick consisitency – almost like honey – but this is not sticky at all – it lathers up well, has a mild spicy fragrance and lasts forever. As you can only squeeze a small amount each time – it doesn’t come running out everywhere. So, you only use what you need. Genuis. THE SCIENCE: Contains Magnesium for energising vitality THE VERDICT: I really like the consistency and smell – it’s got my vote. THE DETAILS: £22.45 Stockist info: 020 7512 0872

The Refinery launches in M&S - The Spa Man

The Refinery launches in Space NK

NEWS: I’m a big fan of The Refinery skincare that launched last year for men, so it’s a bit of a coup that it has secured a spot in Space NK. There are branches of Space NK everywhere, and if I’m in a grumpy mood you may hear me say that there are too many. Can you have too much of a good thing? Well, grump aside, this is good news for men and their skin. The Refinery was created in association with Aromatherapy Associates and is mighty fine. I really rate the Eye Gel reviewed here and have been using the Revitalising Moisturiser for weeks now and think its pretty good too. It is infused with aromatherapy – so it won’t suit everyone’s olfactory senses. THE DETAILS: Available in Space NK stores nationwide including 10 of it’s London locations and online too. Revitalising Moisturiser – £38 Eye Gel – £26

Eyre BioBotanics Hand & Body

THE STORY: I’ve had this sample of Eyre BioBotanics Fusion Hand & Body Moisturiser on the shelf looking at me for ages. It’s in a pump pack (split into two chambers) which, to be honest, I thought was a bit of a gimmick. You pump the lid down and the cocoa butter and light gel come out together, you then mix them up as you rub into the skin. I still think its a bit of a gimmick – but agree, it’s a great hydrating moisturiser – particularly for the elbows and knees. It’s got quite a nice smell too. Light, fresh and really gets to work on dry skin. THE SCIENCE: The light gel is rich in refreshing Aloe Vera and Vitamin C whilst the cream contains Sea Buckthorn Berry and Cocoa Butter to condition and nourish. Boosted with Amino acids, Lycopene and Vitamin B5 it will leave your skin feeling energised and refreshed. Polysaccharides from Certified Organic Aloe Vera are a type of carbohydrate that stimulate skin repair and support the natural healing …

A super little face (and beard) wash

THE STORY: We all know we have to wash our faces – but as beards are very much in vogue it’s timely to remember that they need a good wash too – every day. I’ve been giving Pevonia Botanica Spa Care for Him Aqua Gel Foaming Cleanser (long name) a go over the past few weeks. An excellent face wash – it’s perfect for the beard too. It has a gentle foam – but doesn’t go overboard, a light aromatic scent and washes away quickly and easily. It leaves the skin (and beard) clean and fresh. THE SCIENCE: Green Tea is a natural antioxidant, Lavender is uplifting and adds to the fresh aroma (as does Patchouli and Lemon Verbena) and the oats and amino acids help make this a hydrating face cleanser. THE VERDICT: Clean your beard and face with this now! THE DETAILS: £30 for 200ml
