Men should practice mindfulness

5 Reasons Men Should Practice Mindfulness

Men should practice mindfulness. It’s something that I have written about before and I have now invited Paul Joseph from Health and Fitness Travel to comment on the growing trend of mindfulness and round-up 5 Reasons Men Should Practice Mindfulness. Paul says…. Women are attracted by practicing mindfulness more but things are changing and more men are starting to see the benefits of integrating mindfulness in their daily life. Paul Joseph, co-founder of Health and Fitness Travel, the leading specialists in tailor-made wellness holidays worldwide looks at 5 reasons why men should give mindfulness a good attempt and embrace the challenge. The art of mindfulness focuses the thinkers’ attention on their inner thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment. Men should practice mindfulness to re-focus their minds, to achieve inner balance and stability, with a mindfulness retreat being a relaxing opportunity for those looking to re-connect with their mind and body. Attempting to balance the pressures of home and work life can result in a stressed emotional state, so practicing mindfulness will help men to remain calm, support …

Four Seasons Anahita - Mauritius - Spa Villa

Review: Four Seasons Mauritius at Anahita

Situated on a quiet stretch of coast on the east coast of the island, Four Seasons Mauritius at Anahita is a luxury personified. With its own private island, calm lagoon and pristine white beaches guest accommodation includes a range of secluded private pool or garden villas. The resort makes the most of its coastal setting offering water sports and diving activities for all ages. The pristine beaches with comfy loungers and attentive waiter service ensures that there’s little more to do than enjoy a cocktail or two. Dining is a relaxed affair in the main buildings looking across the fish ponds with a choice of Italian, modern grill, or the relaxed beach bar restaurant Bambou. THE SPA: FOUR SEASONS MAURITIUS AT ANAHITA: A highlight of any stay at Four Seasons is the spa and Four Seasons Mauritius at Anahita doesn’t disappoint. The Spa is set amongst luscious tropical spa gardens with fragrant Frangipani trees, a host of Hibiscus trees in full bloom and stunning Bird of paradise flowers. The team makes full use of the …

Elemental Herbology at Ockenden Manor

Elemental Herbology at Ockenden Manor reviewed

Ockenden Manor has launched a new spa menu featuring a range of treatments from Elemental Herbology and it’s a match made in spa heaven. Ockenden Manor is a cosy Elizabethan manor house with exposed wooden beams and low ceilings situated in the picturesque village of Cuckfield, East Sussex. The spa is built inside a 19th century walled garden and the modern design of the building is a complete contrast to the main hotel building. And as a stand-alone spa it’s is one of the South East’s most impressive. It’s a true countryside setting which benefits from nine acres of parklands and gardens plus all the mod cons you would expect from a contemporary spa. I visited in November 2016 to experience the new partnership with Elemental Herbology. The team at Elemental Herbology has developed a brand new treatment menu, connecting guests with the five elements through a series of bespoke treatments which feature its award-winning products and unique rituals. Elemental Herbology at Ockenden Manor The crowing glory on the spa menu is the bespoke new …

Galgorm Resort and Spa - the Spa Man

Review: Galgorm Resort and Spa, Northern Ireland

Galgorm Resort and Spa is just over half an hour from Belfast and is a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Situated by the gorgeous river Maine, and set within 163 acres of lush parkland it’s billed as Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa. You will most certainly be greeted with a warm welcome and attentive service, it’s a big property with a big heart and passionate staff. It’s recent expansion and the launch of the Thermal Village has added an additional 48 guest rooms but at no point do you feel crowded or over run with people. Three restaurants and two bars (including a gin and champagne bar) means there are plenty of options for dining and drinking. The River Room offers a classy menu with refined service, Gillies has more hearty fare and Fratelli Restaurante has an Italian menu featuring pasta and pizza. Countryside walks or day trips to the north coast are within easy reach or you could simply lounge in the spa day in day out. …

Finca Cortesin - The Spa Man

Review: Finca Cortesin, Spain

THE HOTEL Opened in 2008, Finca Cortesin is an elegant, refined country house hotel that’s both relaxed and welcoming, offering five-star service in a subtle, personal style. A world away from the typical Costa del Sol hotel, it offers a modern mix of hacienda style retreat with a definite nod to its Andalusian roots. Boasting beautiful landscapes gardens, magnificent views to the mountains and sea and a causal air of exclusivity, it’s a perfect escape for a few days – or even longer. The hotel has 60 suites which are tastefully decorated with calming neutral palettes. The junior suites experiment a little more with splashes of colour and patterned wallpaper. Each with its own terrace, complete with table chairs and sun loungers. You could easily stay in the confines of your room, but with lots of activities (including golf) plus five pools and a beach club you will never be bored. The beach club had a great causal beach side dining restaurant. Pool and sun lounges it’s the best of both worlds and the shuttle …

COMO Shambhala London - The Spa Man

National Spa Week 2016

It’s that time of the year once again when you can abandon all guilt and book a spa treatment, or pull out all the stops and book a spa break. Why? Because it’s National Spa Week and there’s some great deals and offers to be had. Running from 31st October to 4th November, National Spa Week celebrates UK spas and salons by putting them in the spotlight for one dedicated week, giving them the opportunity to showcase the many real physical and emotional health benefits of the treatments that they offer to the UK public. National Spa Week 2016 Participating spas and salons will be providing some fantastic offers and promotions on a range of treatments so that you can discover for yourself why regularly visiting a spa is a necessary personal investment, not just a one off ‘treat’. I’m booked into Ockenden Manor to celebrate the week too – to experience a new Elemental Herbology signature treatment (the brand has just launched at the spa). The main aim of Spa Week is to promote the many health …

Soak Steam Dream Roca Gallery

Soak, Steam, Dream: Reinventing Bathing Culture

Soak, Steam, Dream: Reinventing Bathing Culture 16 September 2016 – 28 January 2017 Admission free Soak, Steam, Dream: Reinventing Bathing Culture is a new exhibition that explores a new communal bathing culture through the work of contemporary architects and designers. The exhibition is part of the 2016 London Design Festival and features international bathhouse projects by Peter Zumthor, Skene Catling de la Peña, H3T architekti and Kengo Kuma. These all re-imagine the bathhouse as a social space, factoring in smart water use for the 21st century. This is particularly exciting for The Spa Man, as it’s rare that spa and bathing culture receives this kind of public platform. This is especially interesting given that we are witnessing a return to traditional forms of bathing and a renewed interest in communal bathing traditions. Curator Jane Withers says, ‘There has been an extraordinarily rich architecture and culture associated with communal bathing since ancient times. With the arrival of the private bathroom and a more clinical approach to sanitation and wellbeing, we have lost this leisurely sense of the …

Elemis Men - The Spa Man

On National Men’s Grooming Day I’m increasingly frustrated by the lack of innovation in spa

National Men’s Grooming Day is a great way for what? For men to go out and celebrate grooming? I don’t think we will see the streets filled with blokes parading around holding their favourite shave gel or moisturiser up high. I’m increasingly frustrated by the lack of innovation in men’s spa treatments I visit about 30 spas a year and try lots of treatments, experiencing some of the very best the industry has to offer. I find it very frustrating that there’s a real lack of innovation in the market for men. Invariably the treatments will be repackaged generic beauty treatments that have been given a title “Energising facial for men” or “Sports massage for men” when in reality, its just the same old, same old. Repackaged, renamed and lacks thought or inspiration. Men are interested in visiting spas and numbers are increasing around the world. I have seen various figures about the number of men who visit spas – but its hard to get an accurate figure. According to Conde Nast Traveler magazine, 35% of spa …

Corinthia Life Mindfulness - The Spa Man

New mindfulness therapies at ESPA Life at Corinthia

Award-winning ESPA has embraced the mindfulness movement by launching new mindfulness therapies at ESPA Life at Corinthia. They feature in a suite of six unique mindfulness therapies, all under one roof. The six mindfulness therapies comprise: ESPA Mindful Massage, ESPA Mindful Facial, Mindful Breathing & Meditation, Mindful Sleep, and two Mindful Fitness sessions. This series of treatments is putting mindfulness at the core of wellness because our mental state is equally as important our physical health and wellbeing. I’m a huge fan of mindfulness, which is the mental state achieved by focusing your awareness on the present moment. Mindfulness can bring about long-term benefits and positively affects levels of happiness and well-being. Scientific studies have shown that mindfulness not only prevents depression but that it also directly impacts the brain patterns underlying day-to-day anxiety, stress, depression and irritability. ESPA Life wants to ensure their guests get the maximum restorative effects mentally and emotionally, as well as physically, from their time at the spa. Laura Vallati, Spa Director at ESPA Life at Corinthia says, “I have …

Global Wellness Day 2017

Celebrate Global Wellness Day 2016

First celebrated in 2012, Global Wellness Day was established in Turkey as the “first” day dedicated to living well, and has now been accepted world-wide, and it is officially celebrated in 73 countries in 2015, reflecting its success. It’s one of the starve, common values of the world that all of us would like to be healthier, to look better, and to live well both physically and spiritually. Living well is the shared dream across the globe. The thinking behind Global Wellness Day is to embrace and celebrate our health and wellbeing, but also to promote this. Highlighting the benefits of living well, there is a team of ambassadors who are the guiding lights of the event. Many spas are actively participating in the global day of celebration with events and activities promoting healthy eating, fitness, meditation and wellness in general. This year the event is dedicated to a passionate campaigner for wellness, Charlene Florian, who sadly passed away earlier this year. I had the pleasure of meeting her a few years ago and she was …
