There’s plenty of choice from this hot list of the best new spas of 2019. The spa and wellness industry continues to grow as the spend on luxury hotels, resorts and destination spas sky rockets. In the UK there continues to be huge investment in country house hotels and a few delayed projects are slated to open in Spring this year including The Langley in Buckinghamshire and South Lodge in Sussex (which I have had a sneak peak at and its stunning).
You are already spoiled for choice, now there’s even more on offer as properties look to raise the bar for spa in the UK and abroad. LUX* North Male Atoll in The Maldives is one I am most excited about as it brings a total new look to the atolls. So here’s where to spa in 2019. The Spa Man’s annual guide to the best new spas of 2019 including: UK, Europe, North America, Asia and the Indian Ocean.
Best new spas of 2019: United Kingdom
Monkey Island Estate, UK
Monkey Island Estate lies on a picturesque island in the River Thames in the historic village of Bray, Berkshire. The two grade I listed heritage pavilions which form the property commissioned in 1723 by the third Duke of Marlborough. These have been completely restored and renovated, with landscaped gardens and views of the River Thames and 27 rooms and three suites. But the SPA! Moored on the banks of Monkey Island in Bray, this luxury spa near London is the first of its kind. Taking inspiration from its riverine surrounds, past inhabitants in the form of royalty, liturgy and literary stars, as well as elegant architecture, it is both a celebration of the power of water and the finest of boating retreats. And it will feature the new brand Moss of the Isles! What could be better?
The Spa at South Lodge, West Sussex
The Spa at South Lodge, near Horsham in West Sussex is going to be huge. I had a sneak preview recently and was impressed by the scale of the project as well as the thought, care and attention that has been taken behind the scenes. With a commanding position overlooking the countryside and South Downs, the 4,120m² luxury spa brings the outside in and takes guests outside as part of their spa journey with clever design and terraced sun decks.
Set into the natural contours of the land, The Spa will complement the landscape with a grass and sedum roof and green oak cladding. I loved the addition of the natural swimming pond and hydrotherapy pool in the fresh air. There will be plenty of lounges to catch the sun’s warming rays. Throughout many sections of the spa there are floor to ceiling windows – particularly in the gym, thermal suite and indoor infinity pool. You feel an instant connection with the outside and it draws your eye to the outdoor sections of the spa (I hear that fire pits are planned – love it!). The new Botanica Restaurant is a very exciting addition and you can expect a predominately plant based menu and local craft beer. 14 treatment rooms and the Ridgeview Beauty Bar featuring manicure and pedicure stations come complete with a glass of Ridgeview sparkling with each treatment. Just for guys is Grizzly’s Barbers, a compact barber’s shop offering beard trim, wet shave and hair cuts. I don’t want to give too much away – but my favourite part from the hard hat tour was the beautifully designed sauna that is glass fronted and looks across the serene landscape. This is set to be one of the best new spas of 2019. It’s a real winner.
