Looking for inspiration for where to spa this year? The Spa Man has compiled his annual list of the very best new spas of 2020. The new year (and new decade) will continue to see growth in spas and wellness destinations across the globe. In the UK there is a steady stream of investment in country house hotels and a very exciting project is due to open in January (Carden Park I’m heading your way soon).
Already spoiled for choice, now there’s even more on offer as properties look to raise the bar for spa in the UK and abroad. It’s interesting to see two new One and Only properties debut the Chenot spa concept. So here’s where to spa in 2020. BEST NEW SPAS OF 2020: UNITED KINGDOM
Carden Park, Cheshire
Carden Park, set within a 1,000 acre Cheshire country estate, will open its new multi-million pound luxury spa in January 2020. Natural earth tones, feature walls and contemporary statement furnishings set the tone for the interior design. Floor-to-ceiling windows offers views over the Cheshire landscape and facilities include a large vitality pool, spa garden, a stunning lounge and restaurant area with country views, outdoor first floor terrace with breath-taking views, multiple treatment rooms offer Oskia and Elemental Herbology treatments and then there’s the thermal suite and three relaxation rooms.
Buxton Crescent and Thermal Spa, Buxton
The Georgian spa town of Buxton will be revitalised in 2020 with the launch of a spa and hotel in the grade 1 listed crescent. Plans include a 80-bedroom luxury spa hotel occupying the majority of the Crescent and which will incorporate the magnificent Assembly Rooms and a thermal natural mineral water spa in the Natural Baths. At the heart of the complex will be the original thermal pool, fed by mineral water from a nearby ancient spring (St Ann’s Well) that emerges deep from the earth at a temperature of 27°C. Pampering treatments featuring mineral-packed mud, specially tailored healthy lifestyle programmes, and a host of relaxation and leisure facilities including an indoor/outdoor pool with water features, a sauna, steam and ice rooms, a fitness studio and a beauty salon.
The Londoner, London
Opening in the heart of London at Leicester Square, this large hotel (350 rooms) is hoping to combine boutique style with a range of entertainment including pop up stage, screening rooms and restaurants and bars. The deep basement will be home to subterranean spa, gym, pool, hair salon and barber shop.
The Glasshouse Edinburgh, Scotland
YTL Hotels’ The Glasshouse is set to open new Nordic-inspired spa domes on the hotel’s two-acre rooftop garden. This new spa experience will offer a futuristic feel and will include a virtual reality experience. Watch this space for further details to come.
BEST NEW SPAS OF 2020: EUROPE
Bulgari Hotel Paris
A stunning façade will set the new Bulgari Hotel Paris apart when it opens on the corner of one of the world’s most exclusive roads. Inside its 76 rooms decorated Haussmann-style. The spa will feature a 25 metre indoor pool.
IKOS Andalucia, Spain
Opening on the Andalucian coast, this beachside property on the Costa del Sol opens in May 2020 with 21 acres of landscaped gardens and 400 rooms. Just along the coast from Marbella. IKOS brings an indoor heat pool, gym, thermal suite and plus hair and nail salons to its spa alongside Parisian brand Anne Semonin.
Angsana Corfu, Greece
Angsana hits Greece! The sister business of Banyan Tree (I’m a huge fan) Angsana Corfu is situated 12km south from the town of Corfu and offers a choice of 199 rooms, suites and bungalows with magnificent views of the mountain or the sea. Angsana Corfu offers a wide variety of facilities, including outdoor and indoor swimming pools, state-of-the-art gym and yoga deck. Relax and rejuvenate at the award-winning Angsana Spa.

Arctic Bath Hotel and Spa, Sweden
Arctic Bath is a stunning new floating spa set to open in Swedish Lapland. Consisting of 12 rooms and a spa complex including pools and saunas, all connected by floating walkways. The stunning design is built to resemble felled logs and is impressive addition to the Nordic spa scene. The property will be open for guests from February 2020.
One & Only Portonovi, Montenegro
The first One & Only property to open in Europe, this eagerly anticipated hotel is set on a stunning bat surrounded by mountains on the Adriatic. 113 contemporary rooms and Michelin star food will complement the new spa which will introduce a world-class Espace Chenot Health & Wellness Spa. Here, the Chenot Method® inspires a transformative journey of detoxing and resetting the body, including Chenot check-ups and nutritious diets alongside medical and spa treatments.
Anantara Villa Padierna Palace, Spain
50 minutes from Malaga airport, Anantara announces its first footstep in Spain, with the opening of Anantara Villa Padierna Palace, a palazzo style oasis of gastronomy, spa and golf nestled in the rolling hills of the Andalusian coast. Expect 132 luxurious guest rooms and suites, Mediterranean and Asian gastronomy and the Anantara Spa provides leading medical beauty and soothing Signature Anantara treatments alongside an extensive hydrotherapy circuit. Wellness possibilities include private meditation and Pilates sessions as well as mindful hiking in the Sierra las Nievas mountain range.
Corinthia Palace Atheneum Spa, Malta
Opening in Spring 2020, the new spa in Malta is inspired by the relaxed charm of the Mediterranean, its design evokes a sense of calm and serenity. Expect natural ingredients like salts, honey, oils and botanicals in partnership with ESPA, the spa will offer luxury products, treatments and expertise. Facilities include vitality pool, sauna, steam room, experience showers and heated beds, which looks out onto a secret garden where abundant citrus, herbs and lavender ensure a nature inspired holistic experience. The Athenaeum Spa sits within the gardens of the hotel’s pool garden area also features an indoor swimming pool with jacuzzi, seven treatment rooms, relaxation lounge and terrace, gym and studio.
Artic Elements Lakeside Spa, Finland
Situated in Muonio, the spa sits on the shore of Lake Jeris, next to the Pallas-Ylläs National Park. This pristine and peaceful setting is ideal for the new wellness centre, accessible to those staying at the stylish Hotel Jeris. Alongside the five saunas, Arctic Elements Lakeside Spa will also offer a range of experience and wellness showers, relaxation areas and a revitalising external ice hole swimming area, all set against a backdrop of frozen lake waters, inky-dark pines, thick snow and the rolling landscapes of the third largest National Park in Finland. Opened in Dec 2019 (so just makes the list).
W Ibiza, Spain
Slated to open April 2020 W Ibiza is set on the waterfront of the palm-fringed, sand-drenched beach of Santa Eulalia. Chic, modern and ever so stylish, rooms face the sea and the spa will include treatments such as: Facials, Fitness classes, Foot bath, In-suite massage, Makeup Services, Manicures/pedicures, Massages, Steam room and Waxing.
Cheval Blanc Paris
When you hear that Dior will be responsible for the spa, beauty and wellness, you know this must be Paris. Located in the heart of Paris, a few steps away from the Louvre and the Marais, the art deco-inspired Cheval Blanc Paris has 36 rooms and 36 suites all feeling like a private residence. The rooms have stunning floor to ceiling windows with spectacular views of the Seine from the Eiffel Tower to Notre-Dame Cathedral. Opening in Spring 2020 will be a show stopper.
Can Ferrereta, Mallorca, Spain
Located in the quaint rural town of Santanyí in the south east of Mallorca, Can Ferrereta will be one of Europe’s most exciting new hotel openings in 2020. The team has meticulously restored a historic 17th century grand house, comprising 32 individually designed rooms and suites, surrounded by verdant gardens. Expect to see 25m swimming pool. A gym and a beautifully designed spa, named SA CALMA with hammam and indoor pool will also be available to guests. Opening in Spring 2020.
Paragon 700 Boutique Hotel and Spa, Italy
Paragon 700 in Puglia is a new addition to the hotel and spa scene, the crowning glory is an outdoor swimming pool in lush gardens just a five-minute walk from Ostuni’s main square. The palace’s former water chamber is being transformed into a unique spa that will offer a Turkish bath, Himalayan salt wall, multi-sensory shower and a natural whirlpool dug into the ground. Couples booking the two mezzanine-level treatment rooms can enjoy exclusive access to the spa, essentially their very own private wellness sanctuary.
Six Senses Kocatas Mansions, Istanbul, Turkey
Six Senses Kocatas Mansions will fully open in Spring 2020. The 45-room-and-suite hotel has transformed two former 19th century mansions. The interior design throughout blends traditional local influences with contemporary Six Senses signature touches. Guests will enjoy far-reaching dramatic views of the Bosphorus river. The wellness centre will comprise five treatment rooms and a private suite, hammams, Holistic Anti-Aging Center, fitness room, swimming pool and wet room facilities. Treatment highlights will include a Thai Herbal Massage, Anti-Aging Facial and Coconut Body Scrub.
Four Seasons Hotel Madrid, Spain
Following a seven-year restoration of a collection of seven historic buildings, the new Four Seasons Hotel Madrid is now confirming reservations for arrivals beginning May 15, 2020. With 200 rooms and suites, the main event (in my mind) is the spa. Hotel guests and locals will find a four-level spa retreat capped by a sky-lit indoor pool and sun terrace looking out across Madrid’s rooftops. The spa will be the largest in the city, offering eight treatment rooms plus a salon and 24/7 fitness centre.
Lindos Grand Resort & Spa, Greece
Officially opening in May 2020, Lindos Grand Resort & Spa, Rhodes will launch its brand-new spa which sees ThalassoSpa and Natural Spa Factory join forces to create a collection of natural and botanical signature spa treatments for the face and body, including vegan-friendly treatments. Featuring a stylish internal-external pool, the resort’s new ThalassoSpa incorporates ancient Greek remedies in their signature treatments, with the use of oils, herbs, flowers and botanical plants sourced locally from the island. Expect open plan gym, wrap around infinity edge pools and beach yoga.

Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya
A highly anticipated urban retreat alongside the Chao Phraya River, Four Seasons Bangkok will open in early 2020. The hotel’s 299 rooms and suites feature contemporary interiors and floor-to-ceiling windows, many of which face Bangkok’s busy riverside. The Instagram-worthy outdoor infinity pools are sure to impress as will the spa. Architect Jean-Michel Gathy is the name behind the scenes.
One&Only Desaru Coast, Malaysia
The group’s first resort in Asia: an exclusive beach destination with a spa from Chenot. Set in south-eastern Malaysia (a drive from Singapore Changi Airport) on the sparkling South China Sea, this beachfront escape has a lush tropical backdrop and private stretches of shore. Alongside a cool beach club, the spa is at the heart of the experience here, introducing traditional and holistic practices centred around wellness from Chenot. Expect tennis, golf, diving, watersports and hiking with fabulous restaurants on site. With a focus on wellness-based science the One&Only Spa by Chenot, will include diagnostics and treatments that are customised for each One&Only resort and each guest.
Mandarin Oriental Saigon
Mandarin is due to open its new hotel in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. The Mandarin Oriental Saigon hotel will be situated on the upper floors of this mixed-use complex, and will comprise 227 guestrooms and suites, six restaurants and bars, a range of meeting spaces, a fitness center, a Spa at Mandarin Oriental and an outdoor swimming pool.
Waldorf Astoria Bali, Indonesia
Waldorf Astoria Bali With panoramic views of the ocean Waldorf Astoria Bali will welcome guests to its 96 luxurious villas set on the sprawling estate, ranging from one-bedroom villas to six-bedroom suite villas. Expect two specialty restaurants and a destination bar. A stunning outdoor sea-facing pool with a beach club, a large private beach as well as a health club and spa.

Six Senses Shaharut, Israel
A 60 room resort in the middle of the desert. Six Senses debuts in Israel with what is said to be a stunning location in April. Chiselled into the bedrock, it’s a stark landscape and will bring Six Senses spa-ing to the heart of Israel.
BEST NEW SPAS OF 2020: USA
AMAN New York, USA
Self-styled ‘Aman junkies’ will make a bee-line for this new location as the renowned luxury group makes one of its few urban debuts at Aman New York. Situated in the middle of Manhattan at the iconic Crown Building on 57th and Fifth and it promises 26 storeys of unrivalled luxury, including a three-floor spa, an underground jazz bar and a Central Park-spying wraparound terrace.
Six Senses New York, USA
Six Senses New York will deliver a transformational experience rooted in immersive well-being. Residential owners, hotel guests and local club members will have access to some of the most pioneering wellness programming in the world, along with large spaces for working and entertaining and innovative culinary options. Situated on a full city-block in vibrant West Chelsea, the XI rises above the Hudson River and the world-famous High Line in Manhattan. The hotel occupies ten floors of No. X and will open with 136 guest rooms and suites, a restaurant just off the High Line and a café with an outdoor terrace. The full-service spa will offer a vibroacoustic meditation dome, bathhouse and magnesium pool, Holistic Anti-Aging Center, fitness centre, yoga studio.
BEST NEW SPAS OF 2020: INDIAN OCEAN
Emerald Maldives Resort & SPA
The new five-star, deluxe all-inclusive Emerald Maldives Resort & SPA is a new hot spot in the Maldives. Located in the Raa Atoll, the resort is surrounded by 1.5 km of soft white sand and boasts 120 luxurious villas, both contemporary and tropical in design, divided into 60 beach villas and 60 overwater villas. The resort will offer guests a choice of four restaurants, in addition to a Sunset Pool Café and Sunrise Café. The Emerald SPA offers Balinese and Thai treatments in 10 airconditioned bungalows, and comprises a jacuzzi, sauna and Turkish baths. For the fitness fans – Technogym, two tennis courts, two paddle courts, plus a water sports centre and five-star diving centre.
