Licence to…smell 007 Ocean Royale

THE STORY: As Bond movies have grown in budget and popularity, the inevitable brand extensions have come flooding out. I was a bit sceptical of the fragrance line (call me cynical), but I gladly put my hands up and say – it’s OK. In fact the most recent addition to the line, 007 Ocean Royale, has impressed me so much it’s coming on holidays – my summer scent of choice. It’s fresh and light – won’t last all day – but great for a holiday by the sea. THE SCIENCE: It’s got a touch of refined teak wood at the heart of the scent. It’s base notes are again quite woody – guaiac and cedar wood and there’s a touch of sandalwood. I really picked up the tonka bean, not so much of the Jamaican coffee – but hey, everyone’s got a different nose. THE VERDICT: Love it – a great day time fragrance. Spray it on, sit back and enjoy the ocean views. THE DETAILS: £19.50 for 30ml

Versace Eros

THE STORY: There’s something about Versace Eros. I’ve seen it described as ostentatious, you could even say it’s a bit over the top. You certainly know you are wearing it. It shouts (fairly loudly) then settles down quite quickly into a scent that’s got a summery feel. I could imagine wearing this on holiday overlooking the  sea – Santorini maybe? Donatella designed Eros for a man who is like a Greek God, so maybe I’m channelling a bit of that! Eros is, after all the God of Love. The marketing material says Eros is a fragrance for a strong man, passionate and master of himself. Hang on a minute, lets get back to reality. Back in dreary old London Town – does it work? In my household – it certainly does. There’s an instant citrus zestiness which then settles into a creamy vanilla. But somehow marine-like also springs to mind every time I spritz it (that’s the only way I can describe it) with a subtle note or two of tonka bean. THE SCIENCE: It …

Superdry Orange

THE STORY: I love a fragrance that’s uplifting and zesty and Superdry’s Orange EDT embodies it all. It does what it says on the label – it’s packed with sweet blood oranges and delivers a modern, contemporary cologne.  It’s set off with lots of spiciness and lasts pretty well. It won’t go the whole day but loves you for a good 4-5 hours. THE SCIENCE: Black pepper, sandalwood, frankincense and patchouli lie at the heart of the spicy, heady mix and its all topped off with sweet orange (it’s not cloying or sickly sweet) and works perfectly. THE VERDICT: Bloody brilliant. THE DETAILS: 40ml – £29.50 Available from Superdry stores, and Selfridges and House of Fraser.
