The Spa Man’s favourite spas – 2014

This year its been a privilege to visit some incredible spas around Europe and a little further afield. From banana body wraps to mango body scrubs and some pretty intensive facial massage – I’ve been poked, prodded, refined and renewed. It’s been one incredible year of spa.

Here’s a snap shot of my favourite spas of 2014.

Dolder Grand Spa Terrace - The Spa Man

The Dolder Grand – Zurich

The Dolder Grand certainly lives up to its name and reputation. Positioned high on the hill with commanding views across Zurich.  It combines modern five-star luxury, with old world charm and was magical. The spa is modern, spacious and covers an area of 4,000 sqm with room to move . It  offers a grandeur that few spas achieve, combining wellness with world class luxury. I honestly didn’t want to leave.

Cool-Spa Sri Panwa - compressed

Sri panwa – Phuket

Sri panwa is in a class of its own. Effortlessly cool, it is a mix of private residences and pool villas perched at the tip of Cape Panwa in Phuket. Set in lush tropical surroundings, The Cool Spa  is a secluded space with floating yoga decks and shallow pools set around the reception.  The treatment rooms are located beneath the reception and are both spacious and boast a waterfall tumbling over from the rooftop. I had a banana body wrap and mango body scrub. Authentically Thai and truly memorable.

Kempinski Hotel Bahia

Kempinski Hotel Bahía, Spain

Bathed in sunshine, the Kempinski Hotel Bahía is just over an hour or so from Malaga airport on the Cost del Sol and provides everything you need for a relaxing escape. The spa is small and perfectly formed, having recently been refurbished to create a zen-like sanctuary. It’s not over wrought with fake Asian artefacts, there are tasteful art pieces throughout the spa and it’s a lovely space to chill out for a few hours. The staff were attentive and enthusiastic so if you want affordable five star luxury combining sunshine and spa – this could be for you.

Banyan Tree Spa Pool Villa - C

Banyan Tree, Phuket

The Banyan Tree Spa is set amongst tropical gardens which gives it a sense of authenticity and intimacy. Most of the treatment rooms are individual outdoor villas, open sided and so delightful. Each walled villa is covered by a roof with roll down blinds, gardens, a little moat style pond, Buddha statues, teak seating and lots of greenery. It’s truly Thai and very authentic. What I loved is that you felt the breeze on your skin and the sound of birds flying through the gardens. It was one of my all-time spa highlights.

Dormy House Spa-Reception

Dormy House, Cotswolds UK

A country farmhouse retreat which welcomes your with open arms and gives you a big hug. Cosy, warm and friendly, the hotel has won numerous awards in its debut year. The spa is equally impressive with huge outdoor terrace, spa cafe, Champagne nail bar and hydro and thermal experiences and a decent sized indoor pool. And the team has specially trained the therapists in Pure Massage – and it shows. my massage was truly impressive.

Vidago Palace

Vidago Palace, Portugal

The hotel combines old world elegance with one of Portugal’s best spas.  The spa is modern and chic – pure white abounds with its minimalist design. What makes this spa unique are the thermal spa waters which are renowned across Portugal. A large outdoor pool with sun terrace, indoor pools, sun terace and a great couples suite – a weekend spa break in the forest of Northern Portugal is in easy reach.

Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum

Tranquil, spacious, modern and contemporary, Mandarin Oriental Bodrum offers guests sea views and forest vistas at every turn – this really is one of my top picks for 2014. Blending oriental heritage with traditional Turkish culture, the hammam takes centre stage and is the star attraction. It’s a massive spa and well executed. relax in the spa garden or head to the beach – put this on your must-visit list for 2015.
